How do undocumented immigrants "live in our communities for decades" without being deported? My late father failed to sign the 2019 tax return that he mailed into the IRS during April 2020. This triggered a multi-year investigatory process involving multiple IRS employees. I had to respond to about 20 letters and phone calls, mostly with "Both of my parents are dead and I don't have any of their financial documents from 2019." At stake was about $6,000 that the IRS thought my dad had owed because they ignored his (filed-but-not-signed) return with all of the deductions, such as the medical expenses of two people in their 80s, listed. By the time the dust settled, the IRS decided that actually my father had been owed a $4,000 refund that he never got. 61% of undocumented immigrant households use welfare, which can easily be 100 times more expensive, over the years, than what was at stake with my father's 2019 taxes. How is it possible that we have had no mechanism for sending home the vast majority of those who have no legal right to be in the U.S.? – at Jupiter, FL
Today, the Fifth Circuit stripped immigrants facing detention in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi of their right to due process. People who have lived in our communities for years, even decades, can now be locked away with no chance to see a judge or ask for bond. It’s a radical departure from decades of legal precedent and violates the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution, which protects everyone.
This ruling leaves tens of thousands of people imprisoned without the government ever having to say why. It is wrong, and we will keep fighting.

during my time working at a european oil major, word got out i had previously worked in tech and i somehow got loaded with the responsibility of being business analyst and SME for the development of a new pricing tool (in addition to my regular job, of course). obvs, the company, to save a few centimes (or so they thought), outsourced development to a 3rd party indian development team, who worked off a design document that i cooked up over the course of a couple of weeks. no cap, crystal clear design doc - as long as you bother to actually read it, which of course they didn't
in spite of the fact that i spelled out exactly everything they needed to do in the design doc, and would meet up with them biweekly to go over features (i'm not calling them user stories, go cry on r/agile), troubleshoot and so on, they simply could not make it happen. just one example, i remember spending like a month explaining to them twice per week that they were using the wrong primary key for some table (it was fucking up data integrity during updates, blah blah blah), yet they could not figure it out. it only got fixed when i convinced them to let me do a code-along session with their "data engineer" to fix the issue. there were several cases like this per month.
this dragged on for almost a year and somehow they managed to bleed us for $700,000 in development costs for an application that honestly would have taken a single qualified developer maybe a month of solo work to do. At that point, they were perhaps halfway done and I gave my honest assessment to the company that they would probably try to bleed us for another $700,000, at which point the company pulled the plug
this is one story, but frankly i had many at this company. they also outsourced accounting to an indian team as well. absolute fucking nightmare. i would spend hours trying to explain to indians how Excel works, why you can't just make up numbers and you actually need to track unexplained expenses, discrepancies, etc (that's basically literally their whole job) because they could indicate a billing issue or internal data problem. and so on.
i'm honestly unconvinced at this point that outsourcing actually saves money. sure, indians are only $300 per month or whatever, but you end up paying 50 of them to do something a single decent worker could do, and yet they still fuck it up

The whole idea that shooting a retreating attacker is morally wrong seems predicated on the idea that said attacker is somehow running on *one-way feet*, and wouldn’t THINK of firing at you from cover once he reaches said cover.

🚨BODY CAM: 2 Officers Shot During Raid
Body cam footage has been released from an attempted served warrant in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where two officers were shot. One officer recovered after being shot in the femoral artery, while another survived a gunshot to the head thanks to his ballistic helmet.
Incidents like this fuel criticism of modern raid tactics, with opponents arguing that many warrants could be served more safely through a callout rather than a forced entry that increases the risk of violence.
