After 3 years, FINALLY out 🥳
Meta-Designing Quantum Experiments with Language Models
by @soerenarlt, Haonan Duan, Felix Li, @sangmichaelxie & @Yuhu_ai_
[paper] arxiv.org/abs/2406.02470
A transformer writes Python to solve classes of quantum design questions simultaneously.
Method:
Trained on synthetic data of pairs of (quantum state sequence, python code for their generation), the model learns automatically to build generalizations.
Exciting Results:
- Correct generalisations for two classes of entanglement structures, for which previously no generalisation was known!
- Unexpected generalisations for another set of six quantum systems, that fit our expectations for small cases, but not for large ones. Interesting new physical entanglement structures? Never investigated by humans
Final Thoughts:
Both the machine and the human researchers can read and write Python. It's an ideal way to communicate complex scientific ideas, we were basically immediately able to understand the underlying tricks and ideas used by the machine. I bet this will be applicable to many other questions in physics too!
We are hosting a conference on AI and the Future of Science! Happening November 20-21 at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. See link below for details.

Very pleased to announce a new (open access!) paper by our collaboration.
Does the No Miracles Argument Apply to AI?
doi.org/10.1007/s11229-024-0… (1/5)
If the standard NMA is sound, then predictively successful AI systems accurately represent (aspects of) their targets. So they might contain 'hidden truths'.
Alternatively, if the AI-specific NMA is unsound, this might be a reductio of the original NMA. (4/5)

JOB ALERT! Lecturer, 3-years position at @PhilATBristol! Officially a teaching position, but comes with plenty of research time. Must be able to teach Epistemology, Philosophy of AI in particular. Ability to teach Philosophy of Science is a plus

I've now seen many papers on explainability in AI (XAI) state that "explanation" is extensively studied in philosophy w/out engaging w this work deeply. Some cite 1-2 arbitrary papers, claim there is no consensus on the topic, or look to dictionary definitions of "explanation".
