ALT Optimizing a BESS sounds simple. But it isn’t. I often see just one headline: “BESS optimization”. No context, no clear objectives, no explicit risk management. Without these, “BESS optimization” remains an empty label. The complexity of a BESS optimizer depends on many variables. This is the result of my first attempt at structuring them: 1\ is the perspective BRP, BSP, or BRP & BSP? 2\ are we dealing with a Behind-the-Meter BESS or a portfolio of BESS assets in a market zone? 3\ is the coupled consumption dispatchable or only forecastable? 4\ is the coupled production dispatchable or only forecastable? 5\ how deep is the revenue stack? The diagram summarizes the situation. I deliberately chose a matrix representation to highlight how many operational combinations actually exist. This is why I remain skeptical when I read about generic solutions that “optimize BESS”. Context is never trivial, and the right solution must be discovered, understood, and built step by step.
