My landlord said I have 3 days to pay rent or leave. My paycheck comes in 5 days. I told my boss I need my paycheck 2 days early.
He said, "If I pay you early, I have to pay everyone early."
I've been renting this apartment 2 years. $1,300 rent. I have a 4-year-old son. His mother left last year. It's just me and him.
My job pays $20 an hour, every two weeks. Next paycheck is Monday - in 5 days. Landlord notice came yesterday: Pay $1,300 in 3 days or eviction starts.
I went to my boss. I said, "Can I get my paycheck Friday instead of Monday? Just 2 days early? My landlord gave me 3 days."
He said, "If I pay you early, I have to pay everyone early. Company policy. Can't do it."
I said, "My son and I will have no place to sleep Saturday if I don't pay Friday."
He said, "That's not company problem. That's your personal problem."
I have $80 in my account. My son has $0. He is 4, he doesn't understand rent, he just knows we have a home.
I still have 3 days to find $1,300.
I still have 3 days to find $1,300.
The next morning, I went to work hoping to find a way out of my situation.
Around lunchtime, my boss called me into his office. He wanted me to sign some paperwork, but when I entered, his phone was on the desk with a picture of a woman on the screen.
I stopped breathing.
It was my wife.
The same woman who left me with our four-year-old son and disappeared with all our savings.
I stared at the screen, hoping I was mistaken.
My boss quickly picked up his phone.
I asked him how he knew my wife.
He said they had met a few times.
I didn’t believe him.
That evening, I waited until everyone had left and confronted him again.
This time, he admitted they had been seeing each other before she left me.
I felt sick.
While I was working overtime to provide for my family, he was secretly sleeping with my wife.
Then I asked him the question that had been haunting me since she disappeared.
“Where is she now?”
He looked away.
“She’s still in contact with me.”
I could barely control my anger.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“There’s a reason she never wanted you to question the boy’s paternity.”
I went completely silent.
My son is four years old. I have raised him, fed him, held him when he was sick, and stayed awake through countless nights when he couldn’t sleep.
Now, the possibility that he might be my boss’s child is eating me alive.
I haven’t told my son anything. To him, I’m still Daddy, and I will never make him feel responsible for what the adults in his life have done.
But I need the truth.
And the man who refused to help me keep a roof over my son’s head may be the same man who helped destroy my family.
If you discovered that your wife had been cheating with your boss, and you suspected your child might not be yours, would you demand a DNA test or protect the only family you’ve ever known?

Visa Officer: “If your daughter can afford to help you travel, why can’t she pay for the entire trip?”
Applicant: “Because I didn’t raise her to be responsible for every expense I have.”

I went to the graveyard for a burial. During the burial, a scholar reminded us of a Hadith I will never forget.
He said: "Everyone will be raised in the condition in which he dies."
Then he told us how a woman died holding 20k Naira she stole in the labour room.
Everyone at the burial went silent.

HR: “Your position has been eliminated. Today is your last day.”
Me: “Okay. Will I be paid for the 11 days of annual leave I haven’t used?”
HR: “That will be reviewed separately.”
Me: “And my outstanding bonus?”
HR: “Bonuses are discretionary.”
Me: “Understood. When should I return the company laptop?”
HR: “Before you leave today. Also, we need you to document your current projects and brief your replacement.”
Me: “My replacement?”
HR: “She starts Monday. Please make sure the transition is smooth.”
I smiled, packed my things, and left.
For six years, I had been the person they called when a client threatened to cancel a contract, when a report was due at midnight, when a new employee needed training, and when my manager made a promise he couldn’t keep.

The visa officer asked my mother why she wanted to visit the United States.
“My son is getting married,” she replied. “I want to be there for his wedding.”
“How long do you intend to stay?”
“Two weeks. I have a job and a home to return to.”
The officer checked her documents before asking, “Your son has offered to pay for your entire trip. Why are you only staying for two weeks?”
“Because I cannot abandon my responsibilities here just because my son is getting married.”
The officer looked at her again.
“Wouldn’t a mother want to spend more time with her son, especially after being apart for so long?”
My mother smiled sadly.
“Of course. But love doesn’t mean I can leave everything behind whenever I want.”
The interview continued, and she came home without knowing whether her visa would be approved.
