Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. V/@StreetsblogUSA usa.streetsblog.org/2019/05/…

"What follows is our obituary for the concept of generations."
Millennials, Gen Z, Gen X... all garbage labels without validity. They don't help us predict how people work or act, and they hurt our understanding of people change over time. via @rskudesia psyarxiv.com/nrmka

There are just six basic emotional arcs for all stories:
1. Rags to Riches (rise)
2. Riches to Rags (fall)
3. Man in a Hole (fall rise)
4. Icarus (rise fall)
5. Cinderella (rise fall rise)
6. Oedipus (fall rise fall)

Returning all WFH employees to the office 5-days-a week looks almost impossible
- Firms pushing 5 day returns see <50% compliance
- Firms pushing 4 days or less see >80% compliance
Firms should aim for something moderate and succeed, rather than aim for a 5-day return and fail

Being a good entrepreneur can hurt your chances at other jobs.
Corporate recruiters avoid hiring good founders; worrying that they won’t fit in. Non-founders got callbacks 24% of the time, failed founders 16% of the time, & successful founders just 11%! pubsonline.informs.org/doi/f…

One reason why people may choose to remain ignorant is to make it easier to enact their intuitive preference, when freely available relevant information might encourage a more deliberative decision, study by @Kaitlin_Woolley et al finds: buff.ly/3Gm5eju HT @GordPennycook

Question: Do organizational cultures require some pruning to grow and prosper?
Evidence: Communicating 5 or more cultural values to employees obscures what the organization stands for, whereas 4 or less illuminates it.
Conclusion: Less may be more when it comes to culture too.

Thank you @HarvardBiz Idea Watch for featuring our research on how leaders can create #psychologicalsafety in #teams!
Leaders sharing their own prior negative feedback with team members—rather than seeking new feedback—achieved lasting improvements in team psychological safety.

A strong culture (=norms widely shared/strongly sanctioned) is a form of bureaucracy. It mostly rewards conformity & stability.
A subculture is a form of bureaucratic gray zone (=pockets extending discretion). It offers adaptability without often weakening stability. @TessSLea

"Swinging the Pendulum" is my favourite operating principle @Shopify. I learned it here and used for many years in leadership.
It's a metaphor we used to communicate when we need teams to start optimizing for the other end of the spectrum.
Here's how it works:

👀This paper shows the Madmen Theory generally backfires, however: "A madness reputation may have benefits in crisis bargaining, especially if the leader commands a powerful military and is able to control his/her madness reputation sufficiently to avoid it becoming too strong."

Two good papers for uncertain times.

You might want to write more upbeat emails.
Emails & chats are frequently misinterpreted - this paper shows people tend to read positive emails as negative. Further, without informal face-to-face contact to allow causal cooling down of emotions, negativity can fester & spread.
