Since it’s Throwback Thursday, let me share this traumatizing experience my family went through on the 14th of February this year. We were all asleep in our respective rooms when we heard a very loud bang outside. It was so loud that we thought thieves were trying to break into our home. My two siblings and my parents woke up. At first, we were quiet, trying to figure out what was happening. But the noise kept getting louder. Little did we know that a fire was destroying the walls from the other end of the house because my mum’s provision shop is connected to our home. My dad, thinking it was thieves, brought out a machete and started slamming it against the door to scare them away. My mum also started making fake phone calls, pretending she was calling for help, but nothing changed. Then, we began hearing the ceiling fall apart. We thought the thieves were trying to use the ceiling to break into the house. Despite all the shouting and calls for help, nobody came. Suddenly, we started noticing smoke. We were confused at first, but the smoke gradually became so thick that it started choking us. Since it was around midnight, we never suspected a fire. All our attention was focused on the supposed thieves until my dad could no longer bear it. He decided to go outside and confront whoever was responsible because nobody seemed to be responding to our cries for help. My mum had initially stopped him from going outside because she was afraid that if there were several thieves, they could kill him for trying to be a hero. But when he finally stepped outside, we discovered that fire was raging inside my mum’s shop. The shop was still locked, and we could see the flames coming from inside. We immediately ran from compound to compound, shouting for help. Thankfully, more than 50 people eventually showed up to help put out the fire. Interestingly, someone had even called the police, thinking that thieves were trying to break into our home. Unfortunately, my mum lost almost everything in the shop, including: - A fridge - A sewing machine - Two generators - Her provision stocks - A lot of money she usually kept in the shop Till today, the actual cause of the fire remains unknown. But above everything else, we are grateful that we survived. If we had been too afraid to go outside and the fire had spread into our rooms, I honestly don’t know if we would have made it out alive. God forbid 😭🙏 It was one of the most terrifying experiences my family has ever had, and remembering it still sends chills down my spine. We lost properties, but thank God we didn’t lose our lives.
