Loki’s attempt to destroy Jotunheim wasn’t an act of strength or strategy, it was an act of fear & weakness. Loki fears what the truth now means for him & his family, a subconscious fear of what Thor would do/think of him now. It was a desperate attempt to say ‘I’m one of you’.

In the God of War 20th Anniversary Retrospective book, it's revealed that Ryan Hurst(Thor) and his wife, the actress Molly Cookson, like to train rescue dogs and have several of them as pets at any given moment. One day on the set, Ryan Hurst suggested that Mjölnir could be like Thor's pet dog, with canine-like behavior at times. From there, Mjölnir's sentience and behavior began to take shape, and that's where the concept of Thor calling Mjölnir by snapping his finger came from.
