Magic: The Pledge, The Turn, The Prestige
Frontier pretraining is said to be a big-lab-only game. We don’t have 100k chips yet, so there’s only one way: algorithmic efficiency. Our new recipe matches DeepSeek V4 Pro’s pretrain using 50x less compute – that’s roughly half the FLOPs used for GPT3, or ~$0.5M on GB200. magic.dev/blog/pretraining

Those who haven't been in the valley for long don't understand how much positive impact @sama has had on the tech eco-system. He has been an amazing supporter of tiny startups for 15+ years. Even if he hadn't been a stalwart this is absolutely no way to treat a human being.

Today, we are announcing that we have doubled our AUM @LongJourney by closing a $181,818,181.8 fund. I can’t be more proud of what @cyantist and I dreamed up 5yrs ago. For both of us this business has always been deeply personal. Today I would like to explain why it matters to me.

Talk to your users.
The classic software startup writes code to solve users' problems. If AI makes writing code more of a commodity, understanding users' problems will become the most important component of starting a startup. But it already is.

So does @bridgebank it’s really easy to setup too. Everyone should check it out and if you need intros DM me.
FYI: @FirstRepublic has an Insured Cash Sweep business account that is FDIC-insured up to $100M and currently pays a little over 3%. They really should be marketing this more heavily...

It’s even worse that this. If SVB is not backstopped it will lead to a bank run on every small cap bank in California and then the country. It will bring the economy to its knees.
Regulators need to step in to do a *backstop* of depositors (not a bailout of a bank) 40,000 SVB depositor small businesses 30% will fail to make payroll in the next 30 days Estimate 10 employees each 120,000 jobs on the line Years of US innovation on the line

Lou is one of the sharpest minds in research today. Always a pleasure talking to him. This time we recorded our conversation. Thanks for having me, Lou.
Had a great time talking #AI and #QualitativeResearch with @HeyMarvinApp's @prayagn on my podcast. Some really good thoughts on how #UXresearch and #UXresearchers can grow in relevance through using AI when it makes sense (and when it doesn't). soundcloud.com/rosenfeld-med…

"Acknowledge your biases."
What's the #1 rule of user research? This isn't a Fight Club set-up. We really want to know what you think! #uxresearch

The first line of code of @HeyMarvinApp was at the height of the economic panic right at the beginning of the pandemic. Economic downturns are a perfect time to refocus on the basics. My article in Forbes has some practical tricks to improve your product during the downturn.
Talking to your customers also makes business sense. They WANT to give you feedback because they want your product to be successful. forbes.com/sites/forbestechc…

TALK TO YOUR USERS!
It's surprising how often startups will copy their competitor's features rather than talk to their users. The best startups understand they cannot outsource one of the most important parts of building a successful product.

Marvin is back!
Even robots need a reboot sometimes. What have we missed in the #uxdesign and #research Twitterverse lately?

Series B has traditionally been the hardest round to raise. You are raising on the *promise* of scale but with a history of doing unscalable things. It's a very awkward story. The fact that it was *easy* to raise a B for the past 2 years was a historic anomaly.
Series B is an incredibly hard round to raise / price right now. Hearing it being informally called Series Blood. As in, it will squeeze every last drop of blood from you to raise the round. Or you need to sign the TS in blood. Feel free to comment with your interpretation :)
spoiler alert: @HeyMarvinApp is our latest secret to success

Counterpoint: in almost all cases, Venture Debt is fine. I have dealt with multiple debt providers, a few times when things were tough. Every single one of them tried really hard to work with us.
Replying to @paulg
"They were so friendly at first," he said. At which chills ran down my spine. It was like the point in a horror movie where someone walks into a dark room saying "Hello? Is anyone there?"

Almost every single founder I have known of a reasonably scaled company (Series B+) has taken on some venture debt. I have never seen a single company shutdown because the debt was called.
