I ruffled a few feathers in a twitter thread today because I said sermons should not be longer than 35 minutes. As someone who has an MA in homiletics, has preached 100s of sermons, and has taught preaching internationally, take my advice. Less is more. 1/5

A few more preaching thoughts this morning. First, the western world loves epistles, but the rest of the world loves narrative. This probably speaks to the way we are taught to think--linear as opposed to circular. Not right or wrong, but an important observation. 1/4

Since my preaching thread caught fire, I'd like to offer a couple of additional clarifying thoughts. Although I was trained in homiletics, my expertise these days is in American evangelicalism/fundamentalism. So, allow me to offer a brief theological/historical perspective. 1/8

I used to think I had to make theology relevant to life issues. Now I realize that theology shows me which life issues are most relevant.

3 keys to good sermon: a.) prayer, b.) good night's sleep, c.) study/preparation. Yes, in that order.
