Sending huge solidarity to casuals who are teaching their final classes this week not knowing if this is the last time ever because of the state of the higher ed sector. The grief of possibly losing a generation of teachers and researchers is real #savehigheredjobs
Abc journalist @CarringtonAU is looking to speak w/ casual/fixed term university staff (as part of a story for @abc730) who have been laid off or lost significant work as a result of university budget cuts/restrictions. To share your story email: [email protected]

“Anyone who does get the axe, their career is gone forever.” I’m now 5 years post PhD still working a patchwork of jobs in the academy. Like me, many ECRs already felt they were never in the running for an academic “career” pre COVID. Now there’s not even a dangling carrot.
Universities’ COVID funding crisis is “likely to be hard-felt by junior and mid-career researchers and women”.
Phew, so lucky I’m not a woman in a junior research role 🙄

Universities thrive on the (often unacknowledged, underpaid) work of casuals & fixed-term employees - they should be eligible for #jobkeeper & other benefits! #NoWorkerLeftBehind
Support & care for international students is the compassionate & right thing to do!
We want to bombard the Prime Minister over the next 24 hours, to get the message home that the government needs to save higher education jobs.
Join us for "Morrison Monday" & post this to the Prime Minister @ScottMorrisonMP.
Save Higher Ed Jobs!

Given that on ave 48% of all Aus uni staff are on casual or fixed-term contracts (some Unis sit at 75%) it’s probs not a good idea to start cancelling them. Justifying multiple contracts is stressful for everyone #BillsCantBeDeferred @PrecariousPlace @NTEUNSW #Auscasual #Highered

We all need to end academic casualisation + we still have many staff (esp. researchers) on fixed term contracts, but I do want to celebrate that things are changing. We have stopped ST Teaching Fellow posts, converted all to open ended contracts + almost all to lecturer grade 1/7
