On the morning of 9/11/2001, I was in the middle of a busy day in the operating room. My surgical assistant that day was a doctor in his own country, but hadn't gone through the certification process to practice in the U.S so could only work as a surgical assistant. He had a cousin in one of the World Trade Tower buildings, and didn't know that person's fate. I released him from the case, but he wouldn't leave my side.
