Insane story
122 years ago, OU defeated Oklahoma A&M 75-0 in the first Bedlam football game. And the story of that game is pretty incredible.
The game was played on November 5, 1904, at Island Park in Guthrie, three years before Oklahoma became a state. It was a bitterly cold day with strong winds, and one of the strangest touchdowns in college football history took place.
Oklahoma A&M attempted a punt, but the wind was so strong that it blew the football backward, sending it down a hill and into the icy waters of Cottonwood Creek.
Under the rules at the time, the ball was still live. Players from both teams jumped into the creek trying to recover it. OU’s Ed Cook reportedly swam 10 yards to retrieve the football and emerged with a touchdown.
A few other interesting notes from the first Bedlam game:
• OU won 75-0, still the largest margin of victory in Bedlam history.
• Every OU player reportedly scored that day.
• OU won the first 11 meetings between the two schools.
• Oklahoma A&M didn’t score its first points against OU until 1914, and didn’t win its first Bedlam game until 1917.
