How many jains themselves know that saundatti yellamma in belagavi is nothing but Jain padmavati converted.
An inscription once displayed in the temple premises clearly stated "ರಟ್ಟ ಪಟ್ಟ ಜಿನಾಲಯ" thus Ratta's were also jains and this was their main temple.
Photograph of an Jain inscribed stone slab from Saundatti in Karnataka, was taken by William Henry Pigou in 1856, from Taylor and Fergusson's 'Architecture in Dharwar and Mysore'. But this is missing as of today . Maybe temple authority don't want this to be known.
Fortunately one more inscription discovered in the home of a Hubballi trader which unraveled secrets of Jain heritage site Savadatti. The 12th-century inscription is part of a Jina Bimba that is worshipped in the home. "The six-line inscription states that a woman by the name Paduma Siriyavve, who was a follower of Yapaniya sect, performed the ritual of Anati Nompi and as its mark had this Chowseeva sculpture (image with 24 Jain Tirthankaras) made and installed at Nagara Jinalayain Sugandavarti."
While Sugandavarti is the Sanskritised name of Savadatti, Savadatti was a Jain stronghold during the rule of Rattas (feudatories of Rashtrakutas) between the 9th and 12th centuries, it's now a popular pilgrimage centre housing Savadatti Yellamma temple. In Karnataka's history, we find several examples of Jain Basadis converted to Hindu temples over the centuries.
When such transformations happen, it is natural for the original followers to salvage and protect what remains.Jainism was a prominent religion in Karnataka till the 10th century, after which it had to battle for survival against Hindu faiths. There are numerous references to such conflicts, including the Bukkaraya inscription in Kalya, Magadi, Sravanabelagola and Lakshmeshvara in Gadag.
The story of King Meghrath, a previous incarnation of the 16th Jain Tirthankar Shantinath, also copied by Hindu extremists in their fantasy Puranas.

Jainism is everywhere in Karnataka.
Lingayats, Iyengars, Gowdas all 3 are Jains only.
Sadar Lingayats are even today confused whether they are Jains or Lingayats.
Thats why you can feel the Ahimsa (peaceful non-violence) energy of Jains in Karnataka. Thats why people say they feel safe in Karnataka and hence Karnataka is facing huge immigration challenge today as everyone wants to come and live here.
More than anything else, the ancient Gommateshwara statue stands tall prominently on Shravanabelagola Hill reminding everyone of Karnataka's Jain past.
There is no Hindu statue as tall and as ancient as Gommateshwara's statue in Shravanabelagola in entire Karnataka state.
A few years back, this Gommateshwara statue beat the Golden temple of Amritsar, and Taj Mahal and became India's number 1 best wonder of India in a national newspaper democratic poll, chosen entirely by people of India not by biased bbc journalists or leftist experts.
People of entire India themselves chose this Gommateshwara statue over everything else in India.Remember that.
So the power of Jainism and Gommateshwara is still there throughout India.
Even today not many know that Jains are native to Karnataka !
Rice’s work challenged the narrative that Jainism was a “dead” religion in South India by the 19th century. Which was the narrative built by the head caste of Hinduism . His findings showed continuous Jain activity under Mauryans , Shatavana, Gangas, Kadambas, Rattas, Chalukyas ,Rastrakootas, Hoysala, Vijayanagara, and Wodeyar.
Thus B.L. Rice is the single most important figure in the modern rediscovery of Karnataka’s Jain past. Without his meticulous documentation, much of the epigraphical evidence for Jainism’s golden age (4th–12th centuries) would have been lost to time. His Epigraphia Carnatica remains the foundation for all subsequent Jain studies in South India.
