The head of the Special Penitentiary Service in Georgia, Giorgi Pataridze, recommended for suspension after alleged beating of crime figure Davit Peikrishvili in Gldani Prison. Peikrishvili alleges that he was assaulted by newly placed cellmates, criminal authorities Vato Kipiani and Avtandil "Katsro" Bilanishvili, and suffered four broken ribs and skull injuries. Kipiani was accused of plotting to kill Peikrishvili and his twin brother in 2020-2021 but escaped conviction. Bilanishvili has been described by critical Georgian media as a closely linked to Bidzina Ivanishvili's son, Bera, who reportedly initially helped him escape prison. Both figures have been linked in the press to interfering in the elections in Georgia, by mobilising "street resources" and acting as polling station "coordinators". The case adds to the recent series of allegations of s**ual and physical assault in Georgia's prisons, following Giorgi Davitadze's allegation that he was r**ed by prison staff.

🇬🇪26 October marks two years since the parliamentary elections in Georgia. The elections were preceded by widespread violations on human rights and media freedom, as well as pressure on civil society. Local and international observers have reported numerous cases of violations, including lack of anonymity, physical violence at the polling stations, voter intimidation and pressure towards state-employed workers and ethnic minorities, “carousel” voting, ballot stuffing, coordination of voters, violence towards observers, and presence of unauthorised individuals at polling stations. Mass violations were also noted in the OSCE/ODIHR report. "Our final report highlights many problems that negatively affected the integrity of these elections and undermined public trust in the process," noted Owen Murphy, Head of the ODIHR mission. According to official Central Election Committee results, the Georgian Dream received 54% of the votes. Independent exit polls, conducted by Edison Research and Harris X, reported that the ruling party only received 41 and 44 percentage points, respectively. The opposition, led by Georgia’s Fifth President Salome Zourabishvili, refused to recognise the Georgian Dream’s victory and boycotted the results. The majority of the opposition parties have not since claimed their seats in the parliament. On 28 November 2024, Georgian Dream’s Prime Minister Kobakhdize announced that Georgia’s accession talks with the EU would be frozen until 2028, triggering mass anti-government protests, which have been taking place daily to this day. Currently, the ruling “Georgian Dream” is attempting to ban five major opposition parties in Georgia at the Constitutional Court. Additionally, the de facto Georgian Dream government has passed a law preventing the Georgian diaspora from voting in the parliamentary elections.

What happens when political power takes precedence over constitutional principles? Georgian Dream’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, who is a constitutional lawyer by training, now argues that banning opposition parties “is necessary to restore Georgia’s democratic health.” He reiterated the narrative that the opposition represents “foreign agents”. The Constitutional Court of Georgia is currently considering the Georgian Dream’s constitutional lawsuit requesting the prohibition of five opposition parties, including the United National Movement, Lelo/Strong Georgia, Coalition for Change, the Federalists, Gakharia - For Georgia.

I strongly condemn the accelerated hearings by Georgia's Constitutional Court aimed at banning the democratic opposition. This broad, dangerous lawsuit by Georgian Dream is a blatant attempt to silence political alternatives, including our @ALDEParty partners. We stand firmly with the Georgian people and their democratic future! 🇬🇪🇪🇺

🇬🇪“Restore voting rights for the diaspora,” the Georgian diaspora announces protests in 10 cities, on the eve of the second anniversary of the 2024 parliamentary elections in Georgia. In 2025, the de facto Parliament passed a bill prohibiting overseas voting. According to various estimates, there are up to 1.5 million Georgians living abroad. Just in 2025, over 114,000 Georgians emigrated from the country, according to Geostat. Protests will take place this weekend in New York, London, Warsaw, Brussels, Budapest, Dublin, Athens, Rotterdam, Hanover and Livorno.

GEORGIAN DREAM IS TAKING ITS AUTHORITARIAN CRACKDOWN EVEN FURTHER! 🇬🇪 😡 Now, major opposition parties face being banned, potentially stripping hundreds of thousands of Georgian voters of their political representation, including our own ALDE member parties. After targeting protesters, civil society and independent media, the Georgian Dream is now going after political opposition itself. The EU must respond with tougher sanctions against those responsible. We stand with the Georgian people fighting for freedom and a European future.

Constitutional Judge Eva Gotsiridze urges the Georgian Dream representatives to provide clarifications on why each of the parties is requested to be banned. “I would like to make a specific request of the plaintiff: when you present your clarifications—and I urge you to do so, as all the respondent parties have pointed this out—could you please specify exactly what objections or grievances you hold against each political party? Furthermore, which specific facts do you contend should be attributed to which political party?” — Judge Gotsiridze addressed the Georgian Dream representatives during the proceedings. “This is genuinely unclear to us; unless you provide some clarity on this, it will be extremely difficult to conduct these proceedings at all,” she stated. The Constitutional Court of Georgia is to continue the proceedings regarding the opposition parties ban for the next two days.
Georgia’s Constitutional Court begins hearing the Georgian Dream’s lawsuit seeking ban on five opposition parties. The Constitutional Court in Batumi will meet for three days to review the case, filed by the Georgian Dream a year ago, which initially included the United National Movement, Lelo/Strong Georgia, and Ahali/Coalition for Change. The Georgian Dream resubmitted the claim in April and September 2026, adding the Federalists and For Georgia parties to the list. The lawsuit argues that the parties should be banned on the basis of attempting to “overthrow and forcible change of the constitutional order”. The ban would forbid the parties to run in the 2028 parliamentary elections. Since the claim was submitted several times, the deadline for the final decision was reset. Therefore, the ruling, which will be final and impossible to appeal, must be delivered by June 2027. One of the Constitutional Judges, Manana Kobakhidze, resigned on 8 October, citing her lack of impartiality as a founding member of the Georgian Dream.
