AMD CEO Lisa Su’s dad on raising “Semiconductor Queen” : 2 principles from the Talmud. Chun Hwai Su (C. H. Su) said his daughter was very bright and often bored in school, so he sought new parenting approaches. The Talmud: C.H. Su worked as a statistician in the New York City government after arriving in America, and began studying the Jewish religious text because top colleagues were often Jewish. Lesson 1: “One whose deeds exceed his wisdom, his wisdom will endure.” Real learning means applying knowledge. People see what you do, not what you know. Lesson 2: Avoid limits and teach kids to outperform themselves: Avoid overprotecting. Encourage kids to surpass their own abilities rather than just competing with others. Examples: -Lisa loved taking toys apart and didn’t always know how to put them back together. Instead of scolding her, C.H. bought better toys so she could keep exploring how things worked. - When she was ahead and bored in class, he encouraged her to help classmates. The shy girl became more outgoing and was elected student council president. “If Lisa had been educated in Taiwan, in a Taiwanese environment, she wouldn’t be where she is today.” – C. H. Su. Own your intelligence. Nothing more important than this.
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources “a lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centre but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that”

In Texas municipalities and school districts use property tax to fund about 70% of their expenses. We have no income tax. We have generally high sales tax. In Dallas 8.25% Last few years state Republicans have said they want to eliminate property tax (because it mooned post 2022 inflation). They have not provided a plan for replacement of the revenue. Dallas sales tax would need to go to about 20%. In general I am very pro consumption tax and against income/wealth taxes as I think a better design is to incentivize creation of income/wealth and reduce incentive to consume. Municipalities need a way to fund operations and the consumption tax should apply to property. Buying that nice $2.5 million property in the Park Cities? Great, there's a nice big tax on that of a few hundred thousand dollars. Real estate guys love the elimination of property tax, but they ain't gonna like the transaction tax that replaces it.
Ken Paxton calls for the elimination of property taxes in Texas.

Every time I hear "10 sigma" event...
BREAKING: Brazil's -19.8% stock market crash on Monday was one of the rarest market events in the last two decades, according to our analysis. Brazil's EWZ ETF plunged -19.8% on October 26th, marking an 8.4 standard deviation move. For context, the ETF's average daily move over the last 20 years has been just +0.04%, with a standard deviation of 2.36%. Under a normal distribution, the probability of a decline this extreme is approximately 1 in 58 quadrillion. In other words, this event should be virtually impossible under conventional statistical models. What just happened in Brazil was *almost* impossible.

US as a country is incoherent; as a foreign country -- if you are not Israel -- dealing with the US you run into problem either with its President or with its Senate.

Interesting to think of $AMZN ~20% post-IPO stake in Anthropic as a substitute for needing to raise equity. At $2T that is ~$400B of liquid investments it can tap. Would be troublesome for $ANT as a stock, though.

This is what caused Warsh to shift hawkish at Jackson Hole, which in turn set the stage for the unanimous hike on Sep. 16. Now look at where we are now. The crisis in France has flattened the US yield curve. No need for Warsh to be hawkish tomorrow... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/…

People in rich countries are unhappy. In the US they're truly miserable. Sentiment fell more in the US since 2019 than any other country. US sentiment at the 0th percentile of pre-COVID history, others generally around 25th percentile. And our economy doing better than most!

Advice is usually given by a person who has made a mistake and doesn’t want you to make the same one. Maybe listen before you take action:)
