"We embedded the overall effectiveness of the activity of the immune capacity against SARS-CoV-2 within the quantity, representing the combined effects of innate immunity, adaptive immunity, and immune memory on the ability to control the virus."

👍CHART to understand the difference between INTRINSIC and DISEASE SEVERITY and that "the notion that viruses will evolve to be less virulent to spare their hosts is one of the most persistent myths surrounding pathogen evolution." Thx to @yaneerbaryam nature.com/articles/s41579-0…

Great 🧵by @LongDesertTrain on historical & political constraints on acceptance of airborne spread for SARS-CoV-2 and other major pathogens. 🎯
Replying to @LongDesertTrain
Chaplin's view was influential—not because the evidence favored droplet transmission but because his views led to politically acceptable conclusions. With droplet transmission no public action or business regulation was required. @BenEhrenreich: 2/3 thebaffler.com/salvos/airbor…

@ejustin46, thanks for using our work to illustrate your nice post! Just a minor correction: The statement "MUTATION rate is 'the rate at which a virus evolves'" in your post is incorrect. We don't say this in our paper, but the use of quotation marks seems to imply so.
Replying to @ejustin46
2) The excellent study “The evolution of SARS-CoV-2” clarifies the difference between the 2 rates : The MUTATION rate is "the rate at which a virus evolves. This is the intrinsic rate at which genetic changes emerge per replication cycle" nature.com/articles/s41579-0…

We say: "A key determinant of the rate at which a virus evolves is its mutation rate" which means a different thing. "The rate at which a virus evolves" is a definition of the substitution rate, rather than the mutation rate. @Mahan_Ghafari @ArisKatzourakis @NatureRevMicro

Thanks @MarionKoopmans! No better credit than seeing my figure in the lecture theatre! @NatureRevMicro
Preparing for teaching, master students update on key outstanding questions after they did their own SARS COV 2 case studies. Really like this figure in nat mic review published earlier this year, that is an excellent description of viral diversity nature.com/articles/s41579-0…

Happy 102nd birthday to Sir Anthony Epstein. The virus he discovered with Yvonne Barr and Bert Achong in 1964 continues to surprise us! Most recently implicated in multiple sclerosis and long covid, EBV also plays a role in certain cancers. Important therapeutic target.
