Not sure what happened but our original Twitter, 2009-2024, disappeared without a trace and can't be recovered. We're back at the same handle and hope to rebuild our follower base, especially our former students! Looking forward to teaching WNY again this semester. Here we go!
So spring '23 will be the 20th anniversary of the first time @cpatell and I taught Writing New York together. And...we're back. (If this site doesn't go away, we'll be back at @pwhny too.) 💜 @NYUEnglish #WNY23
Have you seen The Apprentice? We're putting it in conversation with Angels this week. Nice timing, eh? (It was an accident.)

And the film's Trump may start out like Joe Pitt but he's much less conflicted about turning to the dark side. He turns fast and then he turns on his master when he's down. It's brutal. I wish more people were watching it/talking about it. youtube.com/watch?v=_bkkTQZW…

A staple of our WNY class since we first taught it in 2003. Thinking of the time he took our class through Central Park in person... greatwhatsit.com/archives/32…

Somehow missed until just now that THE CRUISE is currently screening at IFC. Sad to have missed Bennett Miller's Q&A earlier this month. But I'm heading over to see it this afternoon. First time for me on a big screen! ifccenter.com/films/the-crui…
.@seeshespeak’s intro to Age of Innocence makes its way into today’s lecture by @cpatell. Recommended!

Step into Sir Isaac Julien’s immersive video installation on the life of abolitionist and freedom fighter Frederick Douglass.
In our latest UNIQLO ArtSpeaks, Julien delves deep with civil rights lawyer Sherrilyn Ifill on his work “Lessons of the Hour” → mo.ma/4evspYf

From 6-9 Eastern this morning Lenny Kaye is filling in as a DJ on @wfmu's Wake and Bake. Lots of nuggets on the air today. wfmu.org/playlists/shows/144…
It’s YEKL day in WNY and chances are good that Cyrus will show the baseball clip from HESTER STREET. youtu.be/kQ-fiNGsLdo?si=zAZX…

Looking forward to this tonight, w/ Schnabel, Del Toro, & Wright. What a treat! It will be relevant to our course later in the semester when we think abt downtown scenes in the age of Warhol.
.@jfreewright stars as painter Jean-Michel Basquiat in Julian Schnabel’s BASQUIAT, featuring can’t-miss performances by Benicio Del Toro, Parker Posey, Claire Forlani, David Bowie & Dennis Hopper!
B&W restoration starts tomorrow. Sneak preview tonight! ifccenter.com/films/basquiat…

This semester we're shaking up the schedule and starting, out of chronological order, with Teju Cole's OPEN CITY. This wasn't on our 2003-11 syllabus, since it came out just as we were wrapping up that era and moving to Abu Dhabi. But we hosted a book club to discuss it. 🧵
For part 3 we asked our friend @slstalter, expert on urban mobility, to think about Julius's movements. There's an abrupt cut at the end of the essay here which means a software update on our site gobbled something up at some point. We'll repair if we can. ahistoryofnewyork.com/2013/0…
Finally, Martha Nadell, who contributed a chapter abt Brooklyn to our Cambridge Comp, writes abt OPEN CITY as a 9/11 novel. Another timely piece this week. ahistoryofnewyork.com/2013/0…
