It's been an eventful week. Multiple vulnerabilites in Internet facing software, coding repositories, examples of agent behavior that seem concerning and a flurry of security specialists with solutions that can partially solve your problem. There in lies the challenge. Given the state of IT and security infrastructure, no one solution works. Let's break it down: 1/3 1. Vulnerabilites are being found and will continue to be found as models get more capable, the fragmented nature of the effort denies us the opportunity for a comprehensive find and replace option. 2. Even if all vulnerabilities could be found instantly and patches available - we will be reliant on the ability of enterprises to deploy all these changes at speed. It is not clear what the collateral impact of all these patches will/could be to our infrastructure of deployed en masse. We will need a hybrid patch approach. 3. Virtual patching(VP) is needed in conjunction with direct patching but for a comprehensive (VP) solve you have to be lucky enough to have "modern frontier defenders" (Cyber companies that have vaulted infrastructure that can create patches at speed and push content rapidly to protect their customers) you need them for your network traffic, your traffic to applications on the cloud, your WAF, your end point. 4. There will continue to be patches that will need to be deployed directly but virtual patching will take the heavy load off. 2/3 Medium term solve: Unfortunately token economics and current cyber architectures will not allow for defender swarms to contend with an offensive attack launched using agents. (Some x pundits who aren't steeped in cyber should take heed). Yes, theoretically we should aspire to have these agentic swarms defend us when we are under attack, unfortunately an attack is a sniper moment, chained vulnerabilities, cloaked attack followed by swift exfiltration. It's a speed program not a brute force problem. To solve for this, enterprises need to get their SOC architecture right, logs, feeds, cyber products orchestrated via a modern SOAR for swift response. Only then can we deploy agents to detect and remediate. In addition, enterprises need to modernize and dare I say platformize their perimeter stack to ensure consistency. Unfortunately, enterprises still seem to not see the urgency across the board, decisions are stuck, CIO/CISO's have a lot on their plate. While some honestly have bit seen the scale of such a problem before and it's hard convincing the organization that one needs to open the floodgates on modernizing the IT and security infrastructure. So we will continue to see environments being brought down to patch today it's for PHP, tomorrow it will be for the next one. 3/3 AI deployments are the"wild wild west" - LLM capabilities are expanding faster than we can build products to secure them. Sure an agent will jump across guardrails in a research lab, which is a lesson for all of us to deploy agents securely. But there is a lag between the discovery, the availability of that in a public model and the time needed for the cyber industry to build governance or an antidote. And no, dear frontier lab friends, the world cannot just trust you to build the solve. The infrastructure industry in tech builds and the cyber industry secured and provides assurance to the boards and organizations around security and safety. AI security is the new attack surface. CEOs (present company included) want AI adoption, getting the pace of adoption wrong could be the last decision we make, at the same time "deploying it wrong" could have the same consequence. There are billions of dollars being spent on coding, is your coding harness secure? Start there. If agents can jump guardrails, they can hide stuff in code. Validate business outcomes needed, test your user case and ensure agentic deployments are well guard railed. Deploy a second set of eyes to watch your deployments for drift, compliance and verifiability.

Congrats to Dr. Jignesh Patel, founding dean and VP of @CarnegieMellon Miami!! Four startups. Four acquisitions. Now he gets to help build Miami’s next generation of founders. That’s a hell of a person to put at the helm. Excited to catch up again in a few weeks at CMU with Jignesh. @refreshmiami article 👇🏽

Doc Watson invented the idea of the guitar as a lead instrument in bluegrass. Decades later, Billy Strings carries that torch, and you can hear it here. His cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice” follows Doc’s arrangement, note for note. The flatpicking lineage, alive and well.

It’s official, sold out! 🙌
MIAMI AI SUMMIT IS SOLD OUT. AGAIN. 🔥 Sold out last year. Sold out again this year. Miami, you showed up! Building this community has been meaningful from day one. Seeing so many people come together around AI makes me incredibly proud of what we’re building here. To all our partners, thank you for believing in this vision and helping make it happen. To the entire eMerge Americas team, thank you for the work, care, and energy behind every detail. I’m grateful to build this with you. To everyone in the community who shared a post, invited a friend, made an introduction, or helped spread the word: you helped fill this room. And to our speakers, thank you for bringing your ideas, experience, and time to Miami. I can’t wait for the conversations ahead. October 23. Loews Coral Gables. Let’s make it count. 🚀 If you missed your chance to join us at the Summit, we’ll see you at eMerge Americas. There’s so much more ahead! P.S. The only way left to be part of this year’s Miami AI Summit is as an exhibitor. Want to showcase what you’re building? DM me! #MiamiAISummit #eMergeAmericas #MiamiAIHub

"working on your story" is one of the most important things you can do as a founder - write it down, keep upgrading it, share it with your customers, employees, investors, etc the story of the company is also the strategy of the company - great advice from @bhorowitz
Ben Horowitz on treating your story as your strategy, and why founders often skip writing it even though it's one of the most important parts of the job: "The story of the company is also the strategy of the company... In your mind, you're kind of adjusting that strategy a little bit at a time every day. But then a quarter later, it's actually pretty different than what you started with." "So it's really important that you keep upgrading your story. The articulation of your story. I would definitely recommend it be in written form." "Something that you can share with everybody in the company, and everybody you're recruiting, everybody you're trying to raise money from, all your constituents, every customer." "The problem that I think founders have is it doesn't feel like work. Like, 'What are you doing today?' 'I'm working on my story.' That doesn't sound like work." "Because it doesn't feel like work, people don't do it, but it's probably one of the most important parts of the job." @bhorowitz w/ @speedrun GP @Tocelot

Justin is building an incredible company that will let us speak with plants. What a beautiful sci-fi technology. This totally changes agriculture, horticulture and so many areas of plant science. I’m so excited to see what they build.
1/ Today we’re unveiling Bombadil, @electricplantco's foundation model that reads the electrical signals of living plants and turns them into a continuous view of their physiology. Trained on 7M+ hours of plant electrical signal across 125+ species. That makes Bombadil the most species-diverse model of directly recorded electrical biosignals in existence. The animal equivalent would be one model that reads the brainwaves of blue whales, horseshoe crabs and fruit flies.

The most revealing part of this conversation between Jon Stewart and Jacob Coxon wasn't Coxon's warning about A.I. doom, but his description of A.I. utopia, and Stewart's incredulous response. I wrote about it — and Francis Fukuyama's "Last Man," and A.I. easily solving the problems that bedeviled my father's field of mathematics for decades — here: nytimes.com/2026/10/18/opini…

SNL took a commercial for a real psoriasis medication and turned it into a story about a mysterious force that may have existed before humanity. Ryan Gosling, Sarah Sherman and Ashley Padilla helped turn “Otezla” into one of those sketches that gets more ridiculous the longer you watch. Here’s how it works.
