good god. i probably do a dozen common app references a year, and one of the questions is β€œwhat words come to mind to describe this student?” if i can generate five or six for a kid i see twice a week, i think a parent could handle this?

Ms. Oates here is spreading fake news. How do I know? Because every time I read ULYSSES, my heart breaks a little somewhere along the way again (again!) and I begin to cry.
yes, it's interesting: the more you read of experimental literature, the less emotionally engaged you are; reading the Naturalists, with their (somewhat) plodding monochromatic prose, you can see that this is "real life" in its aching banality as, for all its stylistic bravado, novels like "Lolita" & "Pale Fire" are performative & dazzling.

weird thing to me is i had the β€œnormie reaction” to so much art as a teen: β€œthat’s gibberish.” β€œi could splash paint droplets on a canvas too.” β€œthis is just random ugly noise.” then i just sat with the shit for a while and started to like it, quite quickly!
The frustrating thing for me is how few people seem to realize that both these categories can overlap, and in fact, may be identical.

somehow i just wanted to know β€œwhy? why is this seen as good/interesting?” that question led me places that peremptory scoffing never could.

man, same
It frustrates me that so many people think that reading books like Moby Dick and Ulysses is done by people like me for some kind of intellectual or moral edification and that if I wanted to actually "enjoy or entertain" myself I'd read some pop bestseller.

of course i really just mean the perverted humboldtian model that views the economically remunerative, grant-turbocharged researcher as the only scholar that is worth a damn. the real humboldt said shit like this:

obviously, 2-3 decades ago, i disliked and objected to many aspects of the regnant order. but now, in 2026 CE, it’s as though the regnant order was designed by analyzing my preferences and designing a perfect antipodal hell that would generate maximum revulsion in me specifically

Video games are actually a leading example of where we will supposedly find meaning in a post-AGI world in Amodei's own vision.

I think more people would benefit if they were honest with themselves about their own moral failings. It’s just true that I would be a morally better person if I was veganβ€”but I’m not, and I’m not gonna construct elaborate excuses for why actually vegans are worse people

file this under things i wish i'd thought of myself! very true. the priggish "but why is there [insert silly name / lowbrow joke] in this ostensibly Serious Novel?" is almost exactly tantamount to "but why is there a kletzmer band in this ostensibly Serious German Symphony?"
The original NYTimes review compared β€œGravity’s Rainbow” to Mahler, and that hits the nail on the head.

This La NiΓ±a is incredible. Like 4 years of La NiΓ±a. Will El NiΓ±o ever comeback in the next decade. This La NiΓ±a drought and never ending summer sucks. You obviously can’t predict El NiΓ±o. Maybe one week we will Be 2-3 degrees below normal compared to 30 above. Drought never ends
