Papergames completely redesigned the entire set of biomimetic fishtail modeling for Rafayel, using an entirely different technical approach from his previous Lemurian Sea God fishtail. ✨ Technical highlights of the new fishtail Papergames fully remade the fishtail with an entirely new model, including spine-linked skeletal rigging, underwater soft-body dynamics, ambient occlusion softening and volumetric fog depth for distant views. Structurally, the inner layer consists of a biological scale base, while the outer layer is covered with metallic armor plating. Every single scale has unique details! The materials use PBR technology to accurately reproduce metallic reflections and wear effects. The entire Heartfelt animation was keyframed second by second, giving it an exceptionally high level of detail. 🌊 Underwater scene upgrades, technical difficulty and investment Photorealistic underwater scenes are among the most challenging environments in real-time rendering, with a technical threshold far higher than ordinary land-based indoor scenes. However, to achieve better results, Papergames has continued to optimize and improve them. They adopted procedural dynamics for underwater vegetation, fish-school flocking behavior simulations, global underwater post-processing and a real-time bubble particle system. They also implemented real-time dynamic caustic lighting and shadows, underwater volumetric light rendering and global layered depth-fog technology, addressing three industry-recognized technical challenges in underwater scenes: real-time dynamic caustics, unified underwater dynamics and subsurface scattering. These technologies are computationally expensive and require lengthy debugging cycles, yet all of them were applied to Rafayel’s scenes. 🪸 Scene detail and visual expression The coral reefs and rocks display a pronounced sense of depth through light and shadow, even at a distance. Small details in the corners of the environment are fully realized, making the entire space feel three-dimensional and full of life. They also achieved wet-skin water-film materials, subsurface scattering materials, an interactive bubble particle system and a unified underwater dynamics solver. The rising bubbles, swimming fish and scattering effects of underwater light and shadow are all clearly layered. The underwater scenes show enormous progress compared with previous main-story and birthday versions. 💕 Papergames’ Royal Treatment for Rafayel Papergames spared no effort in applying advanced technology to Rafayel, aiming to give him the best visual results possible. The final result makes his appearance truly stunning. From fishtail modeling to underwater environments, Papergames applied industry-recognized, technically demanding technologies and high-cost detail optimization. They also incorporated both the fishtail and feathered-wing elements requested by Rafayel’s miss bodyguards entirely into his character, further demonstrating the “royal treatment” Rafayel receives from Papergames. Unlike the previous vast, relatively empty deep-sea wide shots, this time we see a close-up of a simulated underwater ecosystem, filled with intricate details. Even the refraction of light around individual grains of sand has been taken into account. 🧜🏻‍♂️🪽 Did you notice this little detail in Rafayel’s new bionic mermaid form? At first, there are tiny, raised wing-like fins on his tail, but as the animation progresses, they appear to grow and unfold into much larger wings! You can even see the little fins sticking out from the side before the transformation happens. The attention to detail in his design is incredible!
