An excellent editorial in today’s @FT_SriLanka, spotted by @bfonseka: a robe should not be a cover for criminals. @anuradisanayake may already have given an inch by amending prison rules for convicted clergy. It is inevitable that they will now demand the whole nine yards.

Ven. Kassapa, the monk who led a campaign demanding a pardon for convicted colleague Ven. Gnanasara says he will now take his struggle to the village level to topple the government. He says chief priests have taken over responsibility for securing Ven. Gnanasara's pardon.

Sri Lanka's president @anuradisanayake is one of the first to react to the dramatic comeback of Brazil's leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. If Flavio Bolsonaro won, it would have been like Namal returning to power!?
Today, the people of Brazil did not just win an election; they defeated the forces of corruption, division and political lies. Comrade @LulaOficial’s historic victory in Brazil shows that the people cannot be fooled by bankrupt political dynasties and the ghosts of the past who believe might is greater than right. Many congratulations, companheiro, for leading the march of progress yet again!

ALERT: Four Buddhist chapters, including Malwatta and Asgiriya, denounce protests demanding the release of convicted monk Ven. Gnanasara, saying they damage the clergy’s public image. Ven. Kassapa, seen in leaked videos meeting a lay backer at a hotel, has called off the protest

Here are clips of ex-minister Sarath Weerasekera walking into a Colombo hotel room to meet Ven. Kassapa and then leaving. The monk enters the hotel in burqa-style attire, possibly to conceal his identity. Weerasekera is a strong backer of the Bodu Bala Sena branch of Buddhism.

Saffron burqas? A person covered from head to toe in a saffron robe was spotted entering The Kingsbury last night, trailed by former MP Sarath Weerasekera -- a staunch supporter of the Bodu Bala Sena branch of Buddhism. Discretion is also a monastic virtue.

Egg on face: Mrs Rubawathy Ketheeswaran was named by @BimalRathnayake in Parliament on Oct 8 among 50 alleged corruption cases. She now sits on the newly constituted Public Service Commission (PSC) . On Oct 22, BR subtly excluded her. Ouch.
Leader of the House @BimalRathnayake says he is compiling a list of about 150 high profile crooks. Says three people, including Thilan Wijesinghe, should be taken out of a list of 50 he unveiled on Oct 8. Action against them could continue, but not relevant to the broader issue.

Sri Lanka’s BOI and Port City Commission are enabling online scammers relocating from East Asia, including the Philippines. High time @anuradisanayake took note before Sri Lanka is branded Asia’s cyber-crime centre. Monetabrief is taking it on while most media turn a blind eye.
#SriLanka Parliament's Committee on Public Finance has fired a shot across the bows of POGO style casinos in Sri Lanka's Port City, issuing a warning on money laundering and implications to the island's banks and image. Sri Lanka is being promoted as the next 'paradise' for thousands of ex-workers of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and Cambodian operations by recruiters working for illegal online casinos in Colombo Port City business process outsourcing firms. monetabrief.com/news/sri-lan…

Thilan Wijesinghe has posted a denial of any wrongdoing on his LinkedIn page, but Parliament was told yesterday that a High Court case (HC/9021/2018) against him his pending since Feb 2018. How he bought property on Lake Drive from the Land Reclamation Board is also being probed.
