Activation in Motion
Desert Syntax follows this lineage.
Before the generative machine is set in motion, the authorial intent is rooted in Fluxus: physical prompts, written by hand & printed on bookmarks, distributed to participants to activate the work!

I wanted to share a bit of my thinking behind IOR, my work for Searching for Balance. When @MCHX17 asked me to contribute to this auction, I thought about my current obsession with "virtual glassware": reflection, refraction, absorption. It's a very fertile terrain for me, as it allows me to experiment with shapes that would not be conceivable IRL, but also it opens up experimentation with regards to different indices of refraction, which command how light bends as it enters a new material.
A different train of thought was also going through my mind. I think a lot about the political situation, here in the US and around the world, and how difficult it has become for people of either side to talk to the other side. In the US, the left and right are traditionally represented by the blue and red colors. For a long time I've wanted to make a work that represents this divide, but also inspires to break away from it. In IOR, the blue and red dominate the background, but the glass vessel shows both colors going through it as the camera moves around. Maybe this suggest that, with a little change of perspective, we could understand other people's views better? This is not pretending to be a solution of any kind, but just a reminder that our point of view is not universal.
Finally, the shape itself is made from simple operations. Rather than refine a perfect curve, I'm making volume through boolean operations: here, a torus is subtracted from a sphere, and the subtraction is smoothed. Again, the idea is not to get perfection, but to rediscover how simple principles can yield (hopefully) beautiful results.
Sorry for the long text, I hope you learned something about the way I think about my work. Thanks for reading!
