Kyle Harper: a natural and human history of the Holocene open.substack.com/pub/razib/… Today Razib talks to Kyle Harper, a historian, professor of classics and letters at the University of Oklahoma, and a member of the Fractal Faculty at the Santa Fe Institute whose work integrates the natural sciences into the study of the human past. A native of Norman, Oklahoma, he earned his bachelor's degree in letters from the University of Oklahoma before completing his MA and PhD at Harvard University. Harper's research spans late antiquity, the Roman Empire, environmental history, and the historical impact of infectious diseases and climate change on human societies. His authored books include Slavery in the Late Roman World, AD 275-425 (2011), From Shame to Sin: The Christian Transformation of Sexual Morality in Late Antiquity (2013), The Fate of Rome: Climate, Disease, and the End of an Empire (2017) and Plagues upon the Earth: Disease and the Course of Human History (2021). Today Razib and Harper talk about his latest book, The Last Animal: Human History and the Fate of Life on Earth from the Ice Age to the Sixth Extinction (2026). In their discussion of The Last Animal, Razib and Harper explored the profound history of human-animal relationships and our ongoing influence on global biodiversity. Harper detailed how human activities—from early megafauna hunting and livestock domestication to modern industrial land use—have historically driven mass extinction events and fundamentally reshaped terrestrial and marine ecosystems. While dismissing de-extinction as an unscalable novelty, he emphasized that the future of conservation depends on practical re-wilding efforts and deliberate policy choices that protect natural habitats while balancing complex human needs.

🔱 Part 2 — Court Exhibit 287: Continued alignment and expressed partnership between MIT and Whitehead leadership 🚨 On 19 September 2021, Whitehead Director Ruth Lehmann confirmed that she and MIT Dean of Science Nergis Mavalvala judged the Sabatini situation similarly. ⚠️ Mavalvala responded by praising Lehmann's leadership and expressing her “admiration and support” and appreciation for their “partnership.” These communications preceded the completion of MIT's tenure-review proceedings, subsequently chaired by Mavalvala. 📑 THE ORIGINAL COURT EVIDENCE IS PRESENTED BELOW.

This is the first I've heard of this Samuel Sey gentleman, but apparently he is a Reformed Baptist and Calvinist who came into this country in 2022 and overstayed his visa, not before becoming some kind of minor celebrity among the Protestant establishment?
I have received a statement from DHS regarding Sam Sey: “On October 21, ICE arrested Samuel Sey, an illegal alien from Ghana, at the Columbus International Airport. Sey entered the United States legally in 2022 but overstayed his length of admission by over four years, in violation of our nation’s laws. Sey has no pending applications and accepted voluntary departure. He will remain in ICE custody until removed from the United States.   “We do not pick and choose which laws to enforce or where to enforce them.   “We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $3,000 and a free flight to self-deport now. We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream. If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return.” - DHS SPOX As I get more information, I will update.

In the 2020s, colleges arent finding enough students at all, due to the demographic cliff having it. Theyre very happy to find anyone academically decent, regardless of whether they're smartphone addicts and "dont party like white Gen Xers did on Bay State Rd in the 90s" (those party ppl didnt have very many kids it seems)
This deserted street is at the center of Boston University, which is supposed to have about 40 thousand students. Most are nowhere to be found. The students you do see all look completely miserable. Everyone is foreign- not just in origin but in the world they inhabit. Virtually, she is far away- China, Valhalla, the moon, It wouldn’t matter. it’s not the phone that transports her, it’s her head that’s in the clouds. And she is all of us. Decades ago, this part of campus had the best parties. Now, unfriendly strivers in fantasy worlds. A Tower of Babel, and the split is more than superficially linguistic

Prices in Osaka and Bangkok are ~same despite 4x wage difference. I knew Japan was cheap these days but WOW. And Japan has all the standard First World attributes like drinkable tap water, clean air, safe roads. Explains why everyone and their dog are going to Japan in 2026.

Stuart Needham's map of the beaker/halberd divide in Chalcolithic Ireland. For him, a cultural divide, with beakers signalling foreign elite distinction and halberds local resistance. Add the IE question and one finds a suggestive issue. Do you think he's right? Thread soon.
Replying to @Lethescholar
SO it's very tempting to think a pre-IE language survived in those places. However, this cultural division of Ireland didn't last. No trace of it persists into the Bronze Age. By then, Ireland became one of Europe's richest, most advanced, and most influential societies… (+)

I genuinely do not care what your race is, where your ancestors came from, even what your religious proclivities are. If you’re illegally here, for the sake of my fellow Americans, you (like Sey) need to go back home.
It turns out that many of the white nationalists who keep “threatening” to deport me (because I’m black) aren’t even based in America. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Gurpreet can’t deport me with his VPN. 😂

They’re going to spend time and money on prep anyway. It’s actually better that the schools don’t overload the kids with homework (which will turn out to be boring busywork because it won’t be at their academic level).
Striking detail in the big NYT piece on Taiwanese families adjusting to working at the huge new TSMC chip plant in Arizona: their surprise at the lack of rigor in US schools.

If you truly *love* American cities, you MUST support strict enforcement of laws against anti-social behavior. Paying bus fares, red light cameras, camping on sidewalks, smoking on trains, off-leash dogs, etc etc If people want to do whatever they want, that’s FINE in the suburbs or the country on your own land. But it, fundamentally, cannot work in our densest places where people all have to co-operate in proximity. If we do not, it means cities will continue to be primarily for those able to avoid the annoyances ... the wealthy and/or child-free.

If we don’t change this … in 40 years we will look back on allowing dogs in downtowns the same way we look at cars: As a terrible mistake for how it molded dense urban environment for the benefit of a few ... by not properly pricing in public costs of the "free rider" dog owners and by changing the entire culture to accommodate them. My fear is by then (like with cars today) there will be too many ppl accustomed to the private benefits and impunity of living downtown with their dogs so we're only able to make marginal changes And that negative downstream effects (fewer kids, playgrounds, dirty sidewalks, dog attacks) will be baked in

The main problem for Democrats when it comes to the issue of illegal immigration is that their position can basically be distilled down to: “If the illegal immigrant in question has a sad enough story, we shouldn’t enforce the laws on the books.” Americans fundamentally reject the idea that certain people can or should be deemed immune from the statutory byproducts of our representative democracy.
A Texas father who had lived in the U.S. for 25 years with no criminal record was finishing his night shift as an Uber driver when immigration agents detained him. Without being able to speak to his lawyer or a judge, he was put on a plane and sent first to Ghana, a country where he had no ties. He was then sent to his home country, despite a determination by a U.S. immigration court judge that he could not be deported there due to likely persecution. cbsn.ws/3Ude66r
