What work can robots do today? And what might that imply for the structure of the economy in the years ahead?
New research from @rclegateyang and Maxim Massenkoff out today exploring these questions.
New report with @AnthropicAI: What work can robots do today?
We find that robots extend AI exposure far beyond digital work. Over 80% of working hours in the US are exposed to robots or LLMs, but robots are cost-competitive for just 0.3%.
If robot price declines follow past trends, it will take 40 years to reach 10%. 1/6
Rating exposure over the past 50 years shows how robots have advanced: each year, they have become able to do 2% of the physical work they previously could not.
We also find that robot-exposed jobs saw wages and employment fall compared to other jobs in the same industries. 5/6
Robotics is advancing, but there are still many steps between where we are today and robot-driven automation.
We hope that our measure will remain a useful tool to identify the jobs most exposed to disruption, and to help the world prepare for potential disruption in a way that supports workers.

Excited to share our new working paper: how much did the US standard of living really rise over the twentieth century — and when? With @bhwittenbrink
Using 5.1 million Sears catalog listings, we build a quality-adjusted price index for consumer goods, 1900–1990. Two headline findings: growth was much larger than official statistics imply, and its peak came before WWII, not after. (1/9)
