Alex Rodriguez says that after he retired, his income fell about 90%, from $30,000,000 a year to $3,000,000. In 2018, he was still paying his ex-wife roughly $155,000 a month in spousal and child support, and he went to court to cut it.
In the video below, he talks about what that kind of money did to him long before the bills came due.
He signed a $252,000,000 contract at 25, the richest deal in sports at the time. He says success that early shrinks your self-awareness and grows your ego, and he didn’t have the tools to handle it.
He and Cynthia Scurtis divorced in 2008. A decade later, he argued she now had a new fiancé, 3 homes and millions in the bank. He reportedly offered $20,000 a month for their 2 daughters. She reportedly wanted $50,000.
Then her brother came after him too. Constantine Scurtis, his former real estate partner, sued him for $50,000,000, claiming Rodriguez cut him out of the business they built together. Rodriguez countersued, saying Scurtis took $1,400,000 from the partnership without permission.
Rodriguez says he has now been in therapy for more than 10 years, and that it saved his life.
When a fortune comes this early, is the biggest risk spending it, or the people who expect a share of it later?

After 40 years assisting the media at Boston College, I’ve let BC know that work and family commitments prevent me from returning to the Alumni Stadium press box for a 41st season. A part-time job for a college sophomore became one of the greatest honors of my life.

It’s fitting that Danny V is getting more love than the 2004 Red Sox. He touched more lives in a personal, meaningful way. What a powerhouse

I'd echo everything everyone's said about Danny V.
So many kids grew up reading him, and hoping their teams would get in his stories—and some of us wound up going from there to working alongside him. Covering high schools, seeing Danny V. at a game signaled it was a big one.
But the bigger thing is really the reason why I think it sucks that more young reporters now don't cover high schools before covering college or the pros. Danny got stories because he built real relationships with people, and they trusted him to tell their stories. If Danny beat you on something, that was usually why, and seeing it showed a lot of us the importance of creating a network of people in a way that could only be done through real, human interaction (and not just calling for a box score).
And as for his impact, I saw someone say on here that it'd be hard to count the number of refrigerators his byline was stuck to over the years. I think that says a lot about the difference he made for people.
RIP, my friend. Best to all who loved him.

The absolute 🐐 of high school sports in Mass. Not even close. And, one of the NICEST gents in all of Boston journalism. Always good for a chat during a game. As a young journalist, he cited my coverage of a suspended coach in the @bostonherald, and I was in awe. RIP, Danny V.

There isn’t a person in Massachusetts sports who didn’t have a run-in with Danny. A genuinely better person than writer, and that’s saying something because he WAS Massachusetts high school sports.
Love you, Danny. Thinking of your family. Your memory is a blessing.

This hurts. What a hell of a guy. A pleasure to be around and totally humble considering he could have been voted Governor of New England at any moment. His Brighton bros tell me he was a great b-ball player too. RIP Danny V
