A brilliant essay by Jed Perl. Duchamp, as anti-art, a nihilist, seems right. After “Nude…”, his art became detached from, well, art. It became idea, joke, chess move, consecrated found object. And it fed into Warhol and debased factory art. Read.
Jed Perl confronts Marcel Duchamps’ incomprehensible reputation "Duchamp’s work is untouchable. That’s no surprise. He didn’t want to touch us. The chilliness of the Duchamp retrospective that opened last spring at the Museum of Modern Art mirrors the artist’s own attitude."

“Since its establishment at the country's founding, the American military has differed from its European ancestors, in ways that only make sense if one understands the military as a partner to the American founding rather than a bastard of it.” @TheoLipsky @readliberties
