Sydney Sweeney is a beautiful woman who, by broadcasting hotness, makes herself much less so. Men have two kinds of sexual desire. One kind seeks to team up with a woman, to poses her, to partner and have her full attention and devotion. The other wants to use her—to impregnate her and walk away. By playing to the latter instinct, a young woman can get lots of attention, but of a kind that’s bad for her. This is not an argument against being sexy. ‘Sexy’ is alluring. It is part of beauty. ‘Hotness’ is desperation, advertising a willingness to engage in sex without commitment. It turns men on short term, no doubt, but it turns them off to love. Sweeney is making a common error. Woman in their natural state are built to get men to commit to them, and to shut down men who want to parasitize them. Birth control and a broken culture have lured modern women into behaving like men at their worst. It’s not a win. It’s sad to see a woman with so much going for her, turn herself over to this. As powerful as she is, she’s somehow not her own boss. Maybe that’s too simple because Sweeney is making money from attention, so there is some small chance she understands the trade. But I doubt it.
