One cause of grade inflation:
If a student who *can’t even read* is given an A for the semester, it will go unnoticed. There will be no repercussions for a teacher.
If that same student is given an F, you will have to justify it, potentially even be pressured to change it.
This is called a perverse incentive. It kills education.

This can't be said too often or more emphatically. A huge mistake made by the right is making enemies of teachers who, in the main, aren't radicals seeking to indoctrinate kids. They're ordinary men and women who want to do a decent job and make a difference for kids.
