What's new from Alaska's 2022 legislative session?
Sen. @TomBegich, @RepAndyJ and @repzackfields are discussing #healthpolicy from the 2022 session, interim work, and what the future looks like in Anchorage.

An exciting and historic day! Don’t forget to tune in at 2:30pm Alaska time at live.house.gov to watch Mary get sworn in as our Congresswoman. Alaska is so lucky to have a pro-choice, pro-fish leader who will fight for all of us. @MaryPeltola
Thanks to @drvolland and other South Addition advocates for great oped on street design & safety. #Alaska epidemic of pedestrian deaths is almost completely avoidable with better design. adn.com/opinions/2022/05/23/… #akleg

Thanks to @AKHCoalition leadership for once again delivering a miracle and ensuring budget:
-Is balanced
-Saves $1bil in PF corpus & more in SBR
-Funds BSA and pre-funds $725mil for FY24, refills Higher Ed fund, funds Pre-K
-funds large dividend & energy relief

Building a budget around oil prices far above $100/barrel nearly guarantees a massive structural deficit, based on cursory review of historical oil prices.
So if that's your plan, what massive cuts and/or tax increases are you supporting?

Just got a call in the office from a Republican former Revenue Commissioner (constituent) saying, "Zack, I don't know what you're planning on doing with concurrence, but please vote no."
People are coming out of the woodwork to support fiscal sanity. #akleg
Most legislators want a fiscally responsible budget with a dividend that meets Alaskans' needs. Having a demagogue as Governor who only cares about next year's election makes this budget process incredibly challenging. #akleg
.@GovDunleavy is claiming he bought off Reps. Bart LeBon and Steve Thompson, two of the sharpest House members on state finances. I have a hard time believing they’d fall for his ploy. #akleg #akgov

"Insufficient childcare is one of the driving factors in labor shortage in Alaska," @repzackfields says.
One solution? HB149.
Fields' bill passed the House this week and would create a childcare trust fund to ensure stable funding.

The House is considering language to make it more difficult for police to capture criminals and recover stolen vehicles. I strongly oppose this bill. See the letter below from Anchorage police. #akleg
The lack of access to child care, the cost of child care, and the inability to earn a living wage are all market driven failures that our state must address to make this a place where we can afford to live, work and raise our families.

Meanwhile, the cost of care-and the cost to parents-outstrips more than yearly tuition for full time attendance at UA.

The results are eye-popping costs for raising a child here in Alaska, and decreased labor participation for Alaskan families. At a time when everyone is hiring, this falls disproportionately on women and the households who can least afford it.

Thanks to @mayor_bronson for visiting #akleg yesterday to discuss the @PortofAlaska
Critical project for materiel delivery to DOD installations, for food security, and to keep prices down on food & construction materials.
I'm calling on the #akleg to allocate funding this year for the @PortofAlaska to help reinforce AK's critical lifeline & provide food security for the state. I urge the public to contact their legislators today & join us as we work to save the port.
