#Cholera is an ancient disease we know how to prevent, yet it continues to devastate the poorest countries. Vaccines are vital to preventing and controlling outbreaks.
Earlier this week, I visited EuBiologics in Chuncheon, #Korea, currently the only manufacturer producing oral cholera vaccines at the scale needed for mass vaccination campaigns, supplying around 93% of doses to the global stockpile.
Thanks to international efforts, including EuBiologics’ contribution, global vaccine production more than doubled between 2022 and 2025, from 30 million to 80 million doses annually.
I commend EuBiologics for its commitment to producing life-saving vaccines for people worldwide.

Great to see the 4th i-MCM-Net Global Partners Forum in Seoul!
The strength of the network is its ability to convene partners across the entire MCM ecosystem around a shared goal - timely & equitable access during health emergencies
Thank you to @mohwpr for hosting
Thank you DG! linkedin.com/posts/tim-nguye…
The launch of a stockpile of #mpox vaccines is an important step towards ensuring that countries can access vaccines more quickly when they need them, saving lives and containing outbreaks before they spread further. My thanks to all partners involved.

Pandemic preparedness doesn't begin when an outbreak is detected. It begins long before, with trust, collaboration and the systems we build together.
@WHO is taking another important step towards a stronger and more connected global health security architecture by expanding the WHO BioHub System. If your institution has the expertise and commitment to contribute, I encourage you to learn more and apply: bit.ly/4xgfFy8
No country can prepare for the next pandemic alone. Building stronger systems for sharing, collaboration and scientific cooperation today will help make the world safer tomorrow.

Vaccines are important for this #Ebola outbreak, but not enough…
With @DrTedros & @Dr_JeanKaseya we describe why we must put similar efforts into strong ecosystems for diagnostics & therapeutics to detect, and respond rapidly & effectively

For 100 years, the Weekly Epidemiological Record (WER) has documented the evolving story of global public health, one week at a time.
First published in April 1926 by the Health Office of the League of Nations, the WER began as a simple bulletin: telegraphed reports tracking the spread of five notifiable diseases – cholera, plague, smallpox, yellow fever and typhus.
The publication was entrusted to the @WHO when the Organization was established in 1948.
Today, on its 100th anniversary, the WER is becoming a digital publication, and continues to provide timely epidemiological information: bit.ly/4au2mBj

The format has changed, but the mission hasn’t:
Supporting countries with trustworthy data to protect health.

For 100 years, the Weekly Epidemiological Record (WER) has documented the evolving story of global public health, one week at a time.
On its 100th anniversary, the WER is adopting a new digital format.
First published in April 1926 by the Health Office of the League of Nations, the WER began as a simple bulletin: telegraphed reports tracking the spread of five notifiable diseases – cholera, plague, smallpox, yellow fever and typhus.
The publication was entrusted to the World Health Organization (WHO) when the Organization was established in 1948.
Today, the global health landscape is increasingly complex. Climate change, demographic shifts, technological advances and persistent inequities are shaping how diseases emerge and spread.
The WER - now a digital publication - continues to provide timely epidemiological information, while chronicling major vaccine policy decisions, progress towards disease elimination, and other content for which the WER has come to be known: bit.ly/4au2mBj
The recent #ebola and #hantavirus outbreaks are a reminder that #preparedness systems must already be operational when crises emerge.
We joined partners to discuss how to keep medical countermeasures accessible, affordable and deployable during health emergencies.

Because epidemics begin and end in communities, on the International Day of #EpidemicPreparedness, I call on countries to put communities at the centre of preparedness.
In 2026, Member States have an opportunity to further strengthen their epidemic preparedness through the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) system, the heart of the @WHO Pandemic Agreement. This will enable rapid and fair access to pathogen information and the benefits arising from such information, making the world safer from future pandemics.
The next pandemic is not a matter of if but when ...
Always be prepared for the next flu pandemic.
@WHO has published new guidance to help countries prepare by stockpiling and allocating tests, treatments, and vaccines:

A tradition I have come to cherish over the past years. Every October, we kick off three productive days at the @WorldHealthSmt with a gathering of @WHO colleagues at the WHO Hub in Berlin.
@RD_WPRO said it best: "We are united by our mission to protect health."

The second session explored ways to break barriers to effective funding of innovative MCMs. Speakers highlighted a need for an end-to-end approach and coordinated EU funding to attract R&D investments, particularly to support SMEs and #AMR product development.

The Emergency Committee on #mpox met this week and given the continued increase in cases, concerns about funding for the response and about conflict in the #DRC, advised me that the upsurge continues to constitute a public health emergency of international concern.
I accepted their advice and I just issued a new set of temporary recommendations for the affected and neighboring countries: bit.ly/4bgz4p3

Today, the final consignment of medical supplies and equipment to support Sudan #Ebola virus disease response in #Uganda left Nairobi 🇰🇪, bound for Kampala 🇺🇬. Over the last few days, @WHO has shipped 7 tonnes of gowns, goggles, gloves, boots, face shields and other #PPE that can protect health workers for 10 days, allowing them to safely treat up to 100 patients.

With @WHO's support, @MinofHealthUG has started a vaccine trial against #Ebola Sudan virus today. The trial will enroll contacts of people with the disease, and contacts of the contacts.
This vaccination trial was initiated with record speed, only three days since the outbreak was declared, while ensuring full compliance with international and national regulatory and ethical requirements. It is also the first trial to assess the clinical efficacy of a vaccine against Ebola Sudan virus disease.
This trial demonstrates the importance of investing in R&D for vaccines and treatments and outbreak response preparedness, as well as partnerships. We thank @Makerere University and @UVRIug for their leadership, as well as @AfricaCDC, @CEPIvaccines, @EC_HERA and @IDRC_CRDI for their collaboration on this lifesaving effort.
WHO will continue supporting the government in a comprehensive response to bring the outbreak under control.
The AAM is part of the @WHO led mechanism to increase equitable access to #medicine , #diagnostic tests + #vaccines who.int/initiatives/i-mcm-ne…
WHO and partners have established an Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM) to:
🔹 increase access to #mpox vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics for people at highest risk and
🔹 ensure that the limited supplies are used effectively and equitably.

ALT Picture of the legs of a 3-week-old girl suffering from mpox in the emergency room at Kavumu Hospital in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, on 30 August 30, 2024. The girl's mother said she had been at the hospital for almost two weeks with little improvement in her daughter's condition due to a lack of the necessary medication. Staff say that the health facility is overwhelmed with mpox patients and lacks adequate medicines and protective equipment for health workers.
The AAM is a tool that is part of the @WHO interim medical countermeasures network who.int/initiatives/i-mcm-ne…
Replying to @WHO
WHO has added the MVA-BN vaccine to its prequalification list, to help faster procurement of mpox vaccines and to support communities in urgent need.
As #mpox outbreaks continue, equitable access to vaccines is crucial to saving lives.
