Putin says Ukrainian land belongs to Russia because of history. But what happens when we apply his logic to Russia itself?
On October 22, Putin once again claimed that Ukrainian territories are historically Russian.
โThis is not their territory. Itโs the territory of historical Russia,โ he said.
Interesting argument. Letโs apply the same logic to Russia.
๐ฏ๐ต Japan: The Soviet Union seized the southern Kuril Islands in 1945. Japan still claims four of those islands, which Russia controls today.
๐จ๐ณ China: Vladivostok and large parts of Russiaโs Far East were once under Chinaโs Qing dynasty. Russia acquired these territories through treaties in the 19th century.
๐ซ๐ฎ Finland: Vyborg and parts of Karelia belonged to Finland before World War II. Finland was forced to surrender them to the Soviet Union.
๐ฉ๐ช Germany: Kaliningrad was once Kรถnigsberg, a German city and part of East Prussia until 1945.
๐น๐ท Turkey: The Ottoman Empire once controlled Azov and held territory and influence around the northern Black Sea before Russian expansion.
So hereโs a question for Putin:
Should Japan take back its islands? Should China reclaim Vladivostok? Should Finland reclaim Vyborg? Should Germany reclaim Kaliningrad?
Of course, historical possession does not automatically give any country the right to seize territory today. Most of these countries do not even make such claims.
And that is precisely the point.
If every country started invading its neighbors to recover territory it controlled centuries ago, where would it end?
Ukraine is an internationally recognized sovereign country. Russia recognized its borders.
History is not a license to invade. And Ukraine does not belong to Russia simply because Putin says it does.

He was driving home from his grandfather's funeral when the police pulled the car over and brought out a drug dog.
They searched the family in the rain on the side of the road.
Robert Wilkins happened to be a Harvard-trained lawyer.
He is now a federal appeals judge.
Interstate 68, Maryland, May 1992. Wilkins was 28 and a public defender in Washington. He was in a rented car with his aunt, his uncle and his cousin, driving back from a funeral in Chicago.
A Maryland State Police trooper stopped them for speeding. Then the trooper asked to search the car.
Wilkins, who did this for a living, said no and asked why. He was told that if he refused, they would wait for a drug dog.
They waited. The dog came. The family stood on the shoulder in the rain while a dog went round the car.
They found nothing, because there was nothing.
And then Wilkins did what almost nobody is equipped to do. He sued.
In discovery, his lawyers obtained a Maryland State Police intelligence document that described the profile of drug couriers on that corridor in explicitly racial terms. It was in writing. It was a state document.
The case settled in 1995. The terms included something unusual and important: Maryland agreed to record the race of every driver stopped and searched on its highways, and to hand the data over.
That data became the statistical foundation of what the whole country now calls racial profiling. The phrase "driving while Black" entered American English through cases like this one.
Barack Obama appointed him to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 2014.
The man they made stand in the rain beside a rented car now sits on one of the most powerful courts in America.
His story is one of many that deserve to be remembered.

Last year, Trump invited Conor McGregor to the White Houseโฆ after the MMA wrestler raped a woman so brutally that her tampon had to be surgically removed.
A forensic examiner testified this in court, and McGregor was found GUILTY of rape by a 12-person jury.
Oh, AND a paramedic who examined her testified that she "had not seen a patient as bruised as her in a long time."
SOMEHOW, THIS QUALIFIED HIM FOR A TRUMP WHITE HOUSE VISIT.
