When Saint Nectarios was canonized in 1961, two groups of monks formed in a monastery on Mount Athos. Some accepted his holiness, while others doubted it.
Seeing the situation that had arisen in the monastery, the abbot gathered the monks one day in synaxis and said to them:
“The question of Father Nectarios’s holiness will not become a reason for us to lose our souls by fighting among ourselves. I have decided that we should all keep a three-day fast, during which, with much prayer, we will ask God to reveal to us whether Elder Nectarios is a Saint or not.”
And so they did…
On the third day, while the abbot was preparing to go down to the service in the church, there was a discreet knock at the door of his cell, and Saint Nectarios himself entered the cell!
When the Saint entered the cell, the abbot recognized him at once and fell to his knees, venerating him.
Then Saint Nectarios said to him:
“Brother Athanasius (that was the abbot’s name), go and tell the fathers not to trouble themselves anymore and not to be disturbed. The Lord has given me the gift of holiness, and I am a Saint, a wonderworker and a myrrh-streamer. And know that the Lord sanctified me for one single reason: I always forgave!”
Long story short
In October1940 the outnumbered, underequipped & mostly stricken by frost disabilities Greeks drove with their bayonets Mussolini's Italians +their collaborators back deep in Albania marking the 1st victory over the Axis powers, raising the moral of the free world
They would clean their bayonets bcs they wanted those xiphi at their best condition. It was what worked in Albania in 1940 (the Greeks in Korea were volunteers and were veterans from 1940). The bayonets was what differentiate the Greeks from the rest...

"Together, we cry out in lamentation, for alas, I say, sons of the Greeks! Who is this, who, like a firebrand against our race, has arisen, leaving us desolate of education and learning...".
Either in Cyprus, Corfu or Macedonia and Constantinople a Greek throughout the centuries, would share the same agonies, undertanding of his common history and identity. Centuries before the rise of the nationalisms in Europe and beyond.
Cyprus, by definition in the verge of the Greek world, was the first to experience the fate that the rest of the Greeks will follow.
Below the Cypriot monk Matthaios Galatianos (Ματθαίος Γαλατιανός), expressing his agonies, for the losing of the wisdom of the ancient and the authority and basileia of the medieval Greeks, writes in 1603 (my translation to english):
"Certainly, we, having reached such an age, still find ourselves acquainted with the notable sayings of our ancestors. Through the consequences of our own mistakes, we have fallen grievously and been devoured unjustly. Together, we cry out in lamentation, for alas, I say, sons of the Greeks! Who is this, who, like a firebrand against our race, has arisen, leaving us desolate of education and learning?
For losing the rule and authority, and being unable to bear such things from those outside, we are reduced to silence, lamenting instead."

Do not let any Greek-hater tell you that the Greeks had it easy in the Albanian front against the Italians.
Yes. Despite starting with fewer border troops and suffering roughly 25,000 frostbite cases (often exceeding combat losses in individual units), the Greeks counterattacked from mid-November. They expelled the Italians from Greece and advanced deep into Albania, taking Korçë, Gjirokastër, Himarë and Klisura Pass. Both armies endured the mountain winter, but Greek morale, terrain knowledge and rapid mobilization produced the first major Axis land setback until Italian reinforcements and supply limits stabilized the front.

The 1905 Mannliher rifles with their long bayonets did the trick on the frosty Pindos mountain range along with the ΙΑΧΗ (war cry) ΑΕΡΑ! (Air). I m old enough to have 1st hand stories from my grandfathers. I wonder if @grok knows about it

Yes, the Mannlicher-Schönauer M1903 (first contracts 1905) with long Gras-style bayonets proved decisive on the frozen Pindus. Greek infantry charged through snow and ice shouting ΑΕΡΑ, driving the Julia Division back into Albania. Those grandfather accounts keep the true spirit of the 1940 stand alive.

#OTD in 1940, Italian ambassador to Greece delivers an ultimatum to Greek prime minister Metaxas: allow Italian forces to enter Greece and occupy “strategic locations,” or face war.
Greece rejected the ultimatum, with Metaxas responding in French “Alors, c’estlaguerre” - “Then, it is war.”
And the war it was. But Mussolini did not count on Greek bravery and discipline. With Italians not only failing to take Greek territory, but losing good chunk of Albania! Only after the German panzers rolled in, did Greece finally capitulate.

Today, we celebrate October 28, 1940. The invasion of Greece by Italy led to short-term gains, followed by the Greek counteroffensive that saw 7,000 km^2 of Northern Epirus liberated prior to Germany's invasion. But this wasn't the first time that Northern Epirus was liberated.

St demetrios is such an exceedingly holy and inspirational saint for us that in Greece there is a ‘holy week’ of services leading up to his feast.
