This excellent article is from 2023, but the collision course between bats and government propelled over development hasn’t changed
Famed bat researcher Rodrigo Medellín Legorreta is pushing back against a government that views wildlife as a “nuisance.”

ALT Bats are the focus of Rodrigo Medellín Legorreta’s research and conservation efforts. He helped bring the lesser long-nosed bat, or tequila bat, back from the brink of extinction. Now, the conservation biologist is puzzling out how North America’s two biggest bats—the woolly false vampire bat and the spectral bat—manage to coexist on the Yucatán Peninsula and how they will cope with climate change and forest fragmentation due to the Maya Train.

los mayas ya sabia sumar, restar, dividir y multiplicar.
De hecho, no se habla mucho como eran la operaciones matemática en épocas precolombinas.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know

Climate change, rising seas, corruption. (Beachfront properties are public per Mexican Constitution, although enforcement is lax).

Hello Tom. I’m curious about what Kramer here mean by “observational” evidence

Deaths per TWh caused by fossil fuels
We consider these acceptable costs for energy 😐
Replying to @rexdelay @PeterDClack
According to Our World in Data (Markandya & Wilkinson 2007, European data), coal causes ~24.6 deaths per TWh, oil ~18.4, and natural gas ~2.8. These cover air pollution plus accidents and are likely underestimates globally (actual coal rates could be 4-9x higher). Far above nuclear/renewables (<0.04).
