"Write meaningful tests, make no mistake" doesn't work 🤖
Your AI agent needs your testing judgment, not a better prompt.

Letting AI write your tests?
Terrible idea - the way most devs do it.
"Write meaningful tests" → flaky, shallow noise.

Surprise! My book arrived two weeks before the official release date. 🎉
"Spec-Driven Development: From Specs to Code with AI Agents" (Apress Pocket Guides) is now available, both as softcover and eBook.
It is a compact guide on how to make specs the contract between you and your AI agents, based on the AI Unified Process (AIUP). Requirements, use cases, entity models, and a complete case study, all in about 150 pages.
I hope it helps you bring more structure into AI-assisted development.

Does telling a coding agent to do TDD by itself make a difference? Or is it one of the rare examples where what's good for the human is irrelevant or bad for an agent? Birgitta Böckeler runs experiments and shares her thoughts.

It is real. My book comes out on 29 August 2026! 🎉
"Spec-Driven Development: From Specs to Code with AI Agents", an Apress Pocket Guide.
For 30 years I have seen the same thing. Teams start coding, and the documentation comes later. Or never. Then nobody knows why the system does what it does, and every change becomes a risk.
With AI agents this gets worse, not better. An agent that does not know your requirements will guess. And it guesses fast.
So I turned the order around. The spec comes first and stays the source of truth. Requirements, use cases, entity models. The agent writes the code, the spec decides what is right.
That is the AI Unified Process, and this book is the short and practical version of it. 152 pages. You can read it in a weekend. And there is a case study that goes all the way from requirements to running code, so you see it work instead of only reading about it.
For developers, tech leads, and architects. No background in requirements engineering needed.
Pre-order here 👉 link.springer.com/book/97988…
Writing a book next to client work was hard. Seeing the cover was worth every late evening. I cannot wait to hear what you build with it! 🚀
