my real genuine concern is that this ao3 and ""protection"" for fanworks discourse is just gonna blow up on all of our faces because one bad actor actually reported another person out of spite directly to an ip's legal team mid argument and now everyone is going to hell

covid ruined so many things but fandom spaces being invaded by normes without fandom etiquette really is the worst

all this crazy behavior since ao3 went down is another example why fandom should have stayed for the fun crazy people and never have reached the insane crazy and fake moralist people

oh of course the fan writer-petit bourgeoise are praising the Chinese fan community, who got AO3 banned in China because they kept reporting it to the government over petty beef.

I'm gonna be as nice as I can be, because my gut is that you're young: We've been "engaging with that topic" for decades. The reason you're "not allowed" to make money off of fanfic is because it's the ONLY legal protection we have. This isn't about you. It never was.

And the fact that artists are "allowed" to make money off of fanart but authors aren't is a whole other topic ppl refuse to engage with

Maybe unpopular opinion but i think more fic writers should start doing commissions and setting up like donos or something like i think that should be as common of a practice as selling fan merch and doing fanart comms
