Today, 350+ community leaders delivered a stark warning: our democracy is in crisis.
As we approach the anniversary of last year's riots, we delivered a letter to the PM warning that without action to address widespread disempowerment, we could see more social unrest. 🧵1/3

We were pleased to attend the launch of @right_hereUK Museum of Broken Dreams exhibition @UKParliament this week. Too many community projects fail to get off the ground due to bureaucracy and red tape. We're an example of what’s possible with the right support. #PeopleLedChange

What are we waiting for?
At the @right_hereUK campaign launch, @roz_savage describes some of the inspiring community projects local groups have managed to deliver, and others they hope will become deliverable through the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill.
The Museum of Broken Dreams opens today in Parliament.
An exhibition of community-led projects that could have transformed Britain. The Museum reveals the depth of wasted potential in our country & makes the case for more #CommunityPower.

Coming just one week after the English #Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill was published in Parliament, the letter urges the government to deliver a devolution agenda that transfers genuine decision-making power over spaces, spending, and services to local people. 🧵 2/3
That’s how we'll bridge the gap between politics & ordinary people, giving everyone a stake in our shared future.
Our message to the Prime Minister is this: give us community power and we’ll show you what we’re capable of.

TLDR: It’s a good start but the Bill must include more power for communities to shape services and spending decisions.
📣 Calling all community organisations: If you want more #CommunityPower, sign our letter to the Prime Minister.
Our campaign leader, Sacha Bedding, has written an open letter urging the government to grant more power to local people.

Yesterday’s #SpendingReview did not go far enough to empower local people.
If spending power is transferred only to mayors & local authorities, the knowledge & skills of communities will remain untapped. There’s still time to turn things around in the English #Devolution Bill.

ALT Quote card with a mint green background and orange highlighted text. features a photo and quote from Rich Bell, Director of We're Right Here. The quote says: “It’s encouraging to see the Chancellor increase neighbourhood-level investment in the spending review. But, there’s a vital piece missing: dedicated funding for communities to access directly to shape their places and futures. Without proper funding to support community ownership, many communities will not be able to take advantage of the promised Community Right to Buy. The upcoming English Devolution Bill offers an opportunity for the government to turn this around by putting local people at the heart of local growth.”
Great article by @FredThomasUK highlighting our stark findings and the urgent need to give local people more control over the decisions that affect their places and public services.

“84% of people feel they have little or no control over the decisions that affect their lives. This profound lack of control is feeding alienation, discontent, and support for populist parties”, writes Labour MP @FredThomasUK

With local elections fast approaching, polling reveals a clear public demand: devolve power, and do it at the community level.
Over 50% of the UK believes that giving community groups more power over local decisions would improve their areas.
