I cannot believe this. I have taken Twitter for granted all these years. Since 2009 I have had a place to vent and to commiserate and to celebrate. I hate Elon Musk so much. Love you all.

🚨Announcement🚨 After today’s embarrassing showing in the house I have reflected and decided that I can no longer be part of the Republican Party… The Republican Party continues to lie and swindle its voter base. I in good conscience cannot affiliate myself with a party that stands for nothing and falls for everything. I am officially suspending my petitioning in #NY01 to access the ballot as a Republican and will be filling to run as an independent… I will take my Ultra MAGA/Trump supporting values to the ballot in November as an Independent. @nicklalota and @JohnAvlon ill see you boys in November! 😘 God bless the USA 🇺🇸

They have no shame. None.
The bruised body of Alexei Navalny has been found in a hospital morgue in the Arctic two days after he died in a nearby prison. "Usually, the bodies of people who die in prison are taken straight to the Bureau of Forensic Medicine… but in this case it was taken to the clinical hospital for some reason." "They drove him to the morgue, brought him in, and then stationed two policemen in front of the door. "They might as well have put up a sign saying 'something mysterious is going on here'." news.sky.com/story/alexei-na…

A British writer penned the best description of Donald Trump I’ve ever read: “Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?” A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief. Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty. Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness. There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege. And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down. So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that: • Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are. • You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man. This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump. And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.” -Nate White

Today I had a dear friend call me from Gaza to say goodbye. I begged her not to say it and that she would survive. She broke down and told me bodies of children and women litter the streets. And that even if she is not killed she does not want to live. I know that last week people in Israel had similar conversations. I felt their pain then and I still do. Please feel the pain today of those of us losing friends and loved ones in Gaza. My friends are not animals, they are people.

Important and disturbing 🧵
Almost 9 years ago, I broke the story about Steve Scalise attending & speaking at a white supremacist conference in 2002. Given the renewed attention, I think it's important to correct a few things the media continues to misreport. (1/25) cenlamar.com/2014/12/28/hous…

I just retweeted back to back, a Washington Post investigation showing Hamas took 9 Israeli kids as hostages back into Gaza; and then a Post photographer in Gaza’s image of an entire family killed by an Israeli air strike. Don’t be a person who only condemns 1 of these 2 things.

In the midst of shouting at the journalist asking him a legitimate question about Gazan babies in incubators and the lack of electricity, the ex-Israeli PM claims ‘anyone’ can come provide aid to the people of Gaza. That’s false, he knows it’s false, there’s a blockade on Gaza.

Nope nope nope nope. This is awful.
Crumbl Cookies, a for profit company, is asking people to do “volunteer” labor in order to get a job 💀

You would need mouth glue. That’s the only way.
In case you're wondering how Donald's gag order is going:

Wow. Acting Speaker of the House Patrick McHenry (R) just ordered Nancy Pelosi to leave her current Capitol office by tomorrow, seemingly out of retaliation, telling her “the room will be re-keyed.” This is a sharp departure from tradition. politico.com/live-updates/20…

BIG NEWS: @JNJNews just publicly confirmed it will not enforce its secondary bedaquiline patents in ANY of 134 low- and middle-income countries. That's HUGE. Full credit to Johnson & Johnson for this commitment. This is what we've been waiting for. jnj.com/johnson-johnson-conf…

The banana I’m seeing has a purple thong on. But I can’t tell you why. You’d have to ask the banana. (Also, no helmet, poor careless banana)
That's so cool. I am envious! You can just make a movie in your mind? You could picture, like, a banana riding a scooter?

So one time (yesterday) I got to give a (brief) speech at the United Nations.
Thank you for the amazing speech @johngreen and for everything you've done in the fight to end TB #PeopleOverProfits (I might have maybe cried)

This is not going over well in deep blue Dallas, let’s just say that. Donors are bombarding him demanding their money back that funded his campaign & voters feel like they were conned…because well, they were. There’s such an uproar here locally, he won’t last another week🤨
Dallas mayor Eric Johnson (@Johnson4Dallas) just betrayed voters after being re-elected, announcing he is switching parties from Democratic to Republican. This is shameful.

It’s sad that we have to talk about cost at all but this is right.
We talk a lot about the cost of diagnostics and treatment for illnesses like tuberculosis--but not enough about the cost of not having accessible diagnostics and treatment. In the United States, we built thousands of institutions to house TB patients in the early 20th century--at one point, there were over 800,000 hospital beds in the U.S. for people living with TB. Now, there are almost none--because we don't need them. Why? Partly because the U.S. has less crowded housing and malnutrition than it did a century ago, but largely because we engaged in a comprehensive and very expensive strategy to radically reduce TB in the U.S. This meant working hard to identify cases in communities and then beginning effective anti-TB treatment immediately. Because of the huge investment in case-finding, treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis, TB death rates in the U.S. have fallen by over 99% from their peak. The same could be true--and I believe WILL be true--of every country in the world, but we need to make large initial investments in treatment and prevention. Cheaper diagnostics and drugs will help us get there--but we also require the political will of the world to say that we will no longer allow 1,600,000 people per year to die of a curable illness. In the short run, it'll be expensive. In the long run, this is the best investment we could possibly make. We could be a decade away from >50% drops in TB deaths. But the first step on the journey is convincing companies that it makes sense to lower their prices--and that if they do, they will be credited for helping to bring about a better, healthier world. So that's my message to @DanaherCorp today. They have an opportunity to lead the way, and to be remembered for being essential to the end of tuberculosis. #PeopleOverProfits

CEO of @DanaherCorp Rainer Blair saying the quiet part out loud. Their strategy is to lock poor countries into one testing system, and then grossly overcharge for tests, thus further impoverishing the world's poorest people and enriching the world's richest ones. Unacceptable. #PeopleOverProfits

1/n The lack of situational awareness or interest in how science works from the anti-science crowd is impressive. Let’s take this in steps 1. No funds, meaning $0 come to me personally, the grant and the funds go to the College. – at Houston, TX
