Across Zerodha, here’s roughly the percentage of individual traders who are profitable: - Futures: ≈50% - Option sellers: ≈40% - Option buyers: ≈10% - MTF: too early to tell, considering it’s a new product One of the unintended consequences of increasing STT and all the other measures to curb F&O speculation is that they may have pushed traders toward even riskier trading behaviour. Yes, in theory, losses from buying options are limited to the premium paid. But buying options repeatedly, more often than not, ends with traders losing more money over time than trading futures or selling options. This is not to say that trading futures or selling options is low-risk. It’s a relative comparison. There are a few reasons why options buying has become so popular. Most traders don’t realise this, but STT is already one of their largest costs. As STT on futures increased steadily over the years, trading activity migrated from futures to options. Today, options are about 90% of all F&O trading activity. At the same time, larger contract sizes have made trading futures and selling options more expensive in terms of the margin required. Buying options, on the other hand, is cheaper because it only requires the premium. Hence, more retail traders are buying options. The other big factor is weekly expiries. Earlier, traders mostly traded monthly expiries. As more contracts started expiring every week, trading effectively became 0-day options. Traders began thinking in days rather than weeks and betting on price moves over increasingly short horizons. All of these factors have also led to significant growth in MTF, or margin trading facility. With MTF, traders can borrow against eligible stocks and hold positions for extended periods. But MTF is long only. The intent behind increasing STT, contract sizes, and all the other measures may have been to discourage speculation. The unintended consequence has been traders moving to riskier options trades. This isn’t just about F&O, by the way. These measures also explain the spectacular increase in crypto F&O volumes. Crypto F&O exists in a grey zone where it’s neither legal nor illegal, and traders can get as much as 100x to 300x leverage on many of these contracts. In the last couple of weeks alone, I’ve come across multiple new platforms advertising crypto F&O contracts, including perpetual futures, none of which are regulated. That’s another unintended consequence of these regulatory measures. The larger point I’m making is that any regulatory or taxation change has second- and third-order effects. These changes fundamentally alter market structure, and not always for the better, as the recent measures show. The risks always show up in the most unexpected places. And they show up especially in market phases like this one, when markets fall or trade sideways, and liquidity starts to evaporate. That shows up as wider spreads, higher impact costs, and a further drop in trading volumes. This is perhaps one of the biggest challenges in regulating markets. Indian markets are no longer a backwater, the recent bear phase notwithstanding. We need careful thinking about second- and third-order effects, and thoughtful regulatory design and calibration.

After spending years in the markets, one thing becomes clear: making profits matters, but managing losses matters just as much. Even when you have a solid trading setup, a few bad decisions can affect your overall P&L more than you realise. I was checking the revamped Trading Insights on @Upstox, and the “Areas to work upon” section stood out to me. It helps you see which trading patterns may be hurting your performance and where you could improve, based on your past trades. Sometimes, it’s not about finding more winning trades. It’s about understanding the mistakes you keep repeating and learning to avoid them. #TradingPsychology #RiskManagement #Upstoxhaitohbetterhai #Upstox

Gold prices in India seem to be falling and it's now fallen 20% from the Jan 2026 peak, even after the govt increased duty from 6% to 15% in May. In fact, it's lower than pre-duty May prices now. Just be aware that gold has long periods of no returns (or negative returns)

If you step back and look at what Hindustan Zinc is pulling off right now, you have to give them credit for keeping a tight grip on their operations. When you dig into the numbers, the biggest story is how well they've managed to trim their production costs. Earlier in the year, everyone thought zinc production costs would sit somewhere between $975 and $1,000 per tonne. But they've managed to pull that down into the $825–850 range for the full year, and for the September quarter specifically, it dropped all the way to $703 per tonne. That kind of drop shows they are doing a really good job managing their internal costs. A lot of this comes down to getting good value out of their by-products, especially with global supply chains being disrupted. Interestingly, CFO Amit Gupta mentioned that high energy prices still added about a $50 per tonne penalty to their costs, meaning if energy prices hadn't been an issue, their numbers would look even better. Another huge part of the story is their silver business, which is quietly doing a lot of heavy lifting by accounting for 45% of total profits after a 141% jump in sales. Looking ahead, management indicates that costs might tick up slightly in the next two quarters, however, they are walking out of the second quarter (Q2) on a very strong 142% spike in net profit (₹6,412 crore) What do you think about their cost-cutting so far? Do you think they can keep costs below $850 if energy prices start acting up again later this year?

PPFCF vs Axis Large & Mid Cap: The Mechanics Behind the Numbers A fund's CAGR shows the end destination. Its capture ratios explain the journey. Recent factsheet disclosures reveal an interesting contrast in how both funds participated across market cycles: Market Capture Ratios: • Upside Capture: Axis 101.8% | PPFCF 72.92% • Downside Capture: Axis 84.62% | PPFCF 43.70% These numbers reflect two distinct portfolio profiles: 1. PPFCF: Lower Historical Downside Participation With ~83.96% in equity and ~16% in cash/debt/other assets, PPFCF recorded a downside capture ratio of 43.70%. Its top 10 holdings accounted for ~51% of the portfolio. At the same time, it also captured less than three-fourths of benchmark rallies. 2. Axis Large & Mid Cap: Higher Equity Exposure Operating under a mandate requiring at least 35% allocation each to large-cap and mid-cap stocks, Axis had ~96.94% equity exposure and captured 101.8% of market rallies, while its downside capture was 84.62%. Reported trailing returns across the cited periods: • 3-Year CAGR: Axis 13.98% vs PPFCF 12.14% • 1-Year Return: Axis +3.09% vs PPFCF -4.07% The takeaway: This is not an apples-to-apples comparison of which fund is superior. It illustrates how different mandates and portfolio allocations can translate into different market participation profiles. Historical capture ratios and past returns do not predict future outcomes. When evaluating an equity fund, what matters more to your investment approach: greater participation in market rallies or lower participation in market declines? (Note: Based on reported factsheet metrics for educational purposes.)
