There's a lot of debate on whether AI can be conscious. Like everyone else, I have been trying to make sense of it all.
This is how I understand it: The answer depends on what you think consciousness is. And there are five ways to think about it.
Finally, Swami Sarvapriyananda. He is an Advaitin, and therefore says, intelligence and consciousness are not the same thing. AI can copy what the mind does, but consciousness is different.

Bengaluru Jatre invites designers, architects, artists and students to submit practical ideas to redesign everyday urban spaces, including bus stops, streetlights, benches, waste bins, signage, shopfronts & 500-metre road stretches.
Bengaluru Development Minister @krishnabgowda said initiative aims to make public spaces more accessible, inclusive and liveable.
Submissions close on November 15, 2026. Shortlisted designs will be showcased at Bengaluru Jatre from December 4-13, with a GBA jury selecting best proposals for discussion & possible implementation. Entries can be sent to [email protected]
