A snippet: “The film, through its memorable lead characters, urges us to possibly shed all the weight of negativity, to allow ourselves to luxuriate in the buoyancy of positive emotions.”

dont even talk about someone else playing dorothy or her screentime being short because the impact keerthy created in those few minutes will forever be etched in everyone's hearts
My favorite remains, “chinna chinna vanna kuyil.”
Revathi, by now, has fallen for Mohan. And how beautifully Vaali captures it.
“Maenikull kaatru vandhu mella than aada kanden…
Mangaikull kaadhal vellam gangai poal oada kanden…”
How sublime, Sara. So wonderful to read your piece, after a while.
“I scrub the lamb smell from my fingertips, insert a cottonwool wick into the oil lamp, and light it, cupping the flame until it’s steady.” - what a glorious description. 👏👏👏

Not sure why I wasn't able to paste the link earlier. My short-short in @PassagesNorth Issue 47. So grateful!
One of the many remarkable aspects of Thevar Magan is the strong writing for every character actor. ‘Kallapart’ Natarajan, who plays Revathi’s father, was brilliant in this scene.
Replying to @SridharRavi90
The song starts with the first shehnai piece at the temple, as a mangala vazhthu for the innocent Panchavarnam. When she enters Sakthi’s home, the second shehnai piece comes in, reflecting Sakthi’s state of mind. The dark visuals inside the house complement his pain and guilt, while the lyrics mirror the situation perfectly: “Pugundha idam olimayamai unnal dhane maarum poonguyile.”

Man, look at Sivaji! My aandavar’s aandavar!
A timeless masterpiece of tamil cinema!🔥👑

To me, Thevar Magan’s finale is the greatest climactic sequence in Tamil cinema. The lines uttered by Kamal and SN Lakshmi (“dheivam yaar thalaya kondu poachu paathia”), Raja’s score, Vaali’s lines (“sonnavana thane soozhndhadhinru paavam”), PC’s tracking shot in the railway station, gestures like Kamal falling at the feet of his SIL, all made it unforgettable.
Thevar magan is a great example of how much impact a scene can have on the audiance 💯

Forget about all the slow motion walks and ear-shattering bgm. The man truly does not need anything to bring ‘aura’ on screen. No, not even a cigarette.
My favorite scene where more than acting chops, it was his presence that made him light up the screen, is from Thalapathi.
When he says, “Devaraj ku edhuvum aagathu” you don’t believe him instantly just because of Surya (the character) saying it. It is *Rajnikanth* giving her the assurance. There is an air of assurance that he projects. It is beyond the soft manner of delivering the line. There is an ineffable comfort and familiarity with the star that makes the scene work. This is the aura that I cherish.
Rajni has spoken in English both in comic sequences as well as in ‘mass’ sequences, the latter usually to put educated people in place. I have rarely found the writing convincing, in movies like “Mannan.” One exception was “Baba.” The car scene where he talks to the villain. I then realized that the difference was not just the English lines but the casualness. He would then add, “English correct thane Sir?!” I love seeing glimpses of that understatement on screen. Alas, he is expected to dial up every little moment! Sigh…

Usually people sing praises of “Rhythm.” Here a Singh praises the film. :)
Heart full. ❤️🎥
To me, the best film of Diwali’95 was neither of these movies. It was RK Selvamani’s Makkal Aatchi. An incisive political satire in the first half that turned into an impactful drama in the second half, it remains a favorite of mine.
🔥 31 YEARS AGO, TAMIL CINEMA WITNESSED AN EPIC CLASH OF MASS VS CLASS! 🔥
👑 MUTHU — The evergreen Superstar blockbuster that conquered Japan 🇯🇵 and built a massive fan base overseas!
🎬 KURUTHIPUNAL — The critically acclaimed masterpiece that was India's official submission for the Oscars! 🏆
One movie went for #Oscar submission, while the other established a massive fan base in #Japan. 🇮🇳❤️
Two legends. Two different styles. Two timeless classics that made Tamil cinema proud! 🔥💥

@JinadhattanDM - thanks a ton brother, for asking Lakshmi ma’am about the film. My heart brimmed with happiness and pride hearing her response.
At the 8:35 min point.

She reminisces about the terrace scene with Meena. The manner in which she says (in the scene), “banku bank-aa aalanjen…” was so poignant.

What a depressing week it has been.
After Malaysia Vasudevan, Singer Krishnaraj had the most rooted voice in Tamizh music and perfectly captured the emotions of the working class.
It is unfortunate that an immensely talented actress like Sheela is given such a minuscule role with no scope to perform. The Tamil film industry needs to give more meaningful roles to talents like her, Sumitra Devi and others.
He stole the show. The best part about it was that nowhere in the film promotions or posters was there even a hint of his importance. Vasanth’s shaping of his character combined with Prakash Raj’s magnetic screen presence worked like magic.
The restaurant scene is a master class in itself. Right from the “edhir paarthathavida color aa irukenga” comment to convey his jealousy to the subtle putdown, “Sir ku BP adhigamo,” Prakash Raj was riveting.
