While the Ford government sounded surprised by the NYT story into Therme Group, provincial officials should have been well aware.
In December 2024, Ontario Auditor General uncovered the same thing:
- Therme boasted of "six globally placed facilities under operation."
- The AG reviews the six spas and found five of them were "not owned or operated Therme Group."
- The AG also found Infrastructure Ontario "did not conduct due dilligence to ensure that spas cited by Therme in its submission were in fact owned and operated by Therme Group.
- IO didn't review Therme's org structure because it was only looking Therme Canada OP Inc. not the "global" company.
