It was defense contractors going thru their Senate surrogates that targeted Hegseth - first with Joni Ernst then Wicker and others.
They thought Ernst could lead the charge because of her military “service,” and her strong position on sex harassment in the military.
But they realized she could get taken out in a primary in Iowa so she had to back out.
But Hegseth fought for his confirmation and no GOP Senator was going to block Trump’s first nominee.
The current effort is just another try to do what they failed to do before.
