After more than fifty years of preaching, I have come to recognize that perhaps the greatest temptation along this journey has been to speak of an experience before it has truly had the time to become one in me. I have learned that this is a particular hazard for those of us entrusted with the call to preach, perhaps especially in the Pentecostal tradition. When you have walked through seasons when your presence is in demand, you learn, almost by necessity, to turn your experiences into words with a certain urgency, sometimes before they have settled in your soul. In these latter years, I am learning, albeit slowly, and sometimes with pain, to slow down to the speed of life in order to slow down to the speed of revelation. In my earlier years, I imagined that revelation was found at the table where preachers compared notes. But I have seen how easily that table can become a place where borrowed or recycled words are mistaken for the voice of the Spirit. Genuine revelation is always born on the path of transformation, which is never a shortcut but always a three-day journey: death, burial, and resurrection, again and again and again. I am still trying to catch up to that man who was blinded on the Damascus Road so that he might truly see, the one who confessed, “I die daily”.

If your church did not mention Sauron’s deception of Ar-Pharazôn, leading to the ill-fated assault on Aman in S.A. 3310 and thereby precipitating the Downfall of Númenor, find a new church.

Once every couple of years I like to revisit this quote.
"Once every hundred years Jesus of Nazareth meets Jesus of the Christian in a garden among the hills of Lebanon. And they talk long; and each time Jesus of Nazareth goes away saying to Jesus of the Christian, "My friend, I fear we shall never, never agree." - Sand & Foam / Gibran

It seems like RBW is consistently out of position and taking shots and making poor decisions over and over. But I also recognize that I don’t have the insight to really analyze this. Why is Smetz playing him? What am I missing @JacksonOnRadio

If our politics as Christians cause us to be more suspicious about how a poor single parent spends their welfare check than we are about how billionaires use their wealth to gain unprecedented access to our nation’s halls of power, we need a grand reversal.

Our ability to connect with broken people at the deepest level is proportionate to our willingness to honestly steward our own brokenness.

Psalm 89 begins like many of us begin early in our faith, with a confident expression of God's love: "I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever!" It ends where many of us find ourselves in mid-faith, asking plaintively: "Lord, where is your steadfast love of old?"

Same. Same.
When I read CS Lewis’s “The Great Divorce” I remember letting out an almost audible sigh of relief. It was the first time my imagination had been exposed to an idea of heaven and hell (or the equivalents) that deep down did not make me feel uncomfortable on an ethical level.

It's official. The death penalty is no longer in state law. In 2014 I issued a moratorium. In 2018 the state Supreme Court deemed the death penalty unconstitutional. Now in 2023, passage of SB 5087 strikes it entirely from our statutes. axios.com/local/seattle/2023…

The only surprise here is how low I scored in Pentecostalism. I was raised and formed in the Pentecostal tradition and still often drink from its well.
