Good for us middle-agers; we are in sync with Mother Earth. 😊
Earth just hit middle age, and the Sun already knows how this ends. Our planet is around 4.5 billion years old. That puts it roughly halfway through its entire life. Half. The good stretch might already be behind us. Here’s the finale. In about 5 billion years the Sun runs low on fuel, swells into a red giant and expands so far it swallows the inner planets. Earth included. No asteroid. No alien invasion. Just the same star that keeps us alive slowly turning into the thing that eats us. Plenty of time to finish your coffee, though.

Since the 2026 midterm elections are around the corner, decided to crunch some numbers on the Republican Vs. Democratic share of presidential votes. In what percentage of counties did the presidential candidate win by 40 or more percentage points (landslide) in 1980 versus 2024? Read the latest #DataWhisperer: datawhisperer.substack.com/p…

Which counties grew the fastest between 2010 and 2025? In which counties did this growth landed? Only 35 counties captured more than one-third of the population growth between 2010 and 2025.

#PurdueEngagement25 #ResearchImpact #Nonprofits I'm excited to share the new Community Impact Pitch Challenge, an initiative from the Office of Engagement at Purdue University that connects faculty expertise with community-identified challenges and provides funding to turn ideas into action. What makes this model unique is that the topics are community-identified, the projects are collaboratively developed, and the goal is creating measurable impact within a one-year timeframe. The initiative is especially geared toward helping junior faculty build new community partnerships while translating their expertise into real-world impact. If you're a @LifeAtPurdue faculty member interested in engaged scholarship and community impact, I'd encourage you to explore this opportunity. Applications are due January 1, 2027. purdue.edu/engagement/commun…

Have been researching and conducting community engagement around the #digitaldivide for 15 years. Never could I envision this issue amplified by hardware costs, specifically the #RAMageddon, when the trend had been declining costs for years. theatlantic.com/technology/2…

#PurdueEngagement25 #EngagingCaseStudies What do machine learning, nonprofits, and Purdue faculty/students have in common? The future of community impact. While much of the AI conversation focuses on billion-dollar investments and the latest models, some of the most meaningful applications are happening much closer to home. The Krenicki Center for Business Analytics Machine Learning is partnering with nonprofit organizations to help them use data more effectively while giving Purdue students invaluable experiential learning opportunities. This work demonstrates that AIs greatest value isn't just automation. Its empowering organizations to make better decisions, improve outcomes, and serve communities more effectively. #DataWhisperer #RegionalDevelopment Natural decline (more deaths than births) being the largest component of population change more than doubled across U.S. counties. 👇🏻
What drove county population change? In-migration? Out-migration? Natural increase? Natural decrease?

What tasks should AI be trusted with, and when should humans remain involved? Designing those decision rights is one of the defining challenges of the AI era. Researchers at the MIT Center for Information Systems Research have developed a framework to help. Learn more: bit.ly/4zed20M

Purdue alum Jason Williamson will fly aboard Purdue 1, Purdue’s all-Boilermaker suborbital research spaceflight — and he wants to hear from Hoosier fifth graders. Through the Purdue 1 Indiana Essay Competition, fifth graders are invited to write about how they could use a favorite school subject, hobby or skill to help a space mission crew succeed. One winner from each of Indiana's 92 counties will receive a personalized Purdue 1 mission patch, and if mission conditions permit, winners' names will fly with the crew. Teachers and parents: Share this video with a fifth grader you know! Essays are due Nov. 30: bit.ly/purdue-1-essay

#PurdueEngagement25 What does the @LifeAtPurdue Office of Engagement do is a question I get often. So, at risk of oversimplifying here is an answer I have found very useful. The Office of Engagement (OoE) serves as a bridge between Purdue and communities across Indiana and beyond. Its role is to connect university expertise, research, teaching, and outreach efforts with community needs and opportunities. OoE helps communities access Purdue's resources while also creating opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to partner with communities through research, teaching, and engagement activities that address real-world challenges. These partnerships generate impacts that extend beyond traditional academic outputs such as peer-reviewed publications, research grants, patents, and degrees by creating tangible benefits for communities while enriching the university's research, teaching, and engagement missions. OoE also rewards and helps document, elevate, and communicate these impacts, bringing together engagement efforts from across the university to tell a more complete Purdue engagement story and highlight the many ways Purdue and its community partners create value together.
