Halfway through Trump’s second term, the midterms hang over voters like an executioner’s sword—not just a referendum on the president, but on the country itself.
Trump promised an end to endless Middle East wars. Instead, America is mired in one it didn’t need to fight and is losing badly. Midterms rarely turn on foreign policy, though. They turn on the domestic bottom line. “Are you better off than two years ago?”
For most Americans, the answer is no. Rising gas and diesel prices are driving up the cost of everything that defines ordinary life. That hurts Trump.
But “It’s the economy, stupid” is more than a political warning. It’s an epitaph. Americans have long chosen the cocoon of consumer comfort over harder truths: the exploitation that feeds cheap goods, unsustainable debt, extreme inequality, corruption, support for Israel’s actions in Gaza, an illegal war, and a Russophobic policy that backs Ukrainian nationalists while turning on a former ally.
Tomorrow, people will vote their pocketbooks. It will be a bad day for Trump and those who enabled his failures. They will not vote their conscience. Restoring the cocoon of comfort changes nothing.
The real indictment is not of the president alone, but of a public that refuses to cast off consumerist excess and demand national renewal.
