One of the most transformational practices I’ve implemented over the last couple of years has been requiring a silent start to the Do Now.
It quickly and clearly establishes the purpose of the work the moment students step into my classroom. More importantly, it explicitly models the expectations for every procedure, routine, and practice that follows. I strongly believe that if we don’t get the first few minutes of a lesson right, it becomes much harder to get the subsequent parts of the lesson right as well. The opening minutes aren’t dead time before learning begins. They are the beginning of the learning process.
I’ve committed to this even though it sometimes makes me feel like a bit of a lone wolf. Students are expected to begin their Do Now retrieval practice silently from the moment they walk through the door whether there are three minutes until the bell or three seconds. I’ll sometimes look down the hallway and see students in other classrooms mingling, talking, and waiting for the bell. The bell work is projected on the board, but students are still standing in the hallway, flowing in and out of the doorway.
And then, sandwiched in between those rooms, is mine. Once a student crosses my threshold, the expectation is simple: learning has already begun. No waiting for the bell. No waiting for me to tell them what to do. No transitional period between “arriving at class” and “starting class.” They walk in, get their materials, look at the board, and begin retrieving what they know.
That consistency does something important. It turns the beginning of class into a predictable cue for learning. The routine itself communicates: This is what we do when we enter this room. The students don’t need a speech about being ready to learn. The environment, the routine, and the task make the expectation explicit. The learning starts at the threshold.
Great PD with a fellow 956 native! It’s powerful to learn from someone with shared experiences, especially when her strategies align well with the needs of our MLs. We must continue learning, growing, and bringing effective practices back to our campuses. #ChooseAldine #Puro956
