Ever wonder why the forcing from CO2 is a constant PER DOUBLING ? This paper by @romps, @takes_by_jake, and @jedman42 goes through the reasons in exhaustive detail, but the short explanation is as follows... (Thread) romps.berkeley.edu/papers/pu…

Opening at Berkeley for an Assistant Professor in Earth and Planetary Science. Particular focus is on two areas: 1) earth and/or planetary surface & sedimentary processes in present or past; or 2) climate science including oceans, cryosphere, atmosphere on all time scales. 1/2

A new study led by Yang Chen (also @randersonjt, @romps, @jacobtseeley, Veraverbeke, Riley, @zamekonnen) finds that lightning will double in parts of the Arctic underlain by permafrost, raising questions about the future of Arctic fire and carbon release. romps.org/papers/pubs-2018-a…

Today the Stanford faculty senate voted on whether to recommend divestment from fossil fuels to the board of trustees. They voted overwhelmingly to *keep* investing in fossils. I watched the meeting. Three words to sum it up: ignorance, excuses, & cowardice. Thread

Sometimes a piece appears that is so juicily deceptive, so full of false and misleading information, that it cries out for a response, if only to study its ignorance-spreading mastery. Today's article in the @nytimes is just such a piece. nytimes.com/2020/01/09/opini…

One of the great things that happened at #AGU19 last week was this Climate Beer! One person said it was "the best part of AGU for me... Made the whole thing worth it." We forged connection and unlocked emotions to accelerate climate action... and to feel better.

Right now 28,000 scientists are at the #AGU19 conference in San Francisco:How far do they fly to SF&back? 285million km=1.9x Earth-Sun=🌎🛫🌞🛬🌎.That's a big carbon footprint. Why we can't decarbonise @theAGU without virtual participation?White paper: github.com/milankl/CarbonFoo… 1/5

A few ways climate language has been corrupted: Global warming -> climate change Fossil fuels -> greenhouse gases Fossil fuels -> human activity Fossil fuels -> energy Replacing fossil fuels -> climate change mitigation Replacing fossil fuels -> emission reductions

There are still some folks out there, I'm told, who have not heard how awesome @JayInslee's climate plans are. This thread explains.
It is hard to overstate how awesome this is. I may need to thread, briefly. jayinslee.com/issues/freedom…
