Washington State’s millionaires tax will fund universal free school meals for every public school student in the state. Unless voters repeal the tax. Vote NO on I-645! washingtonpost.com/education…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The millionaires tax deposits all revenue into the state general fund with only non-binding intent language for universal school meals (a dedicated account amendment was rejected); ~70% of students already have access to free meals via existing programs. lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2025-… lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2025-… ospi.k12.wa.us/about-ospi/new… seattletimes.com/opinion/editor… theolympian.com/news/politics-…

San Diego’s fast-permitting model is going national. Bloomberg Philanthropies will fund up to 30 cities to copy it, or Austin’s backyard-home or Atlanta’s strike-team fixes. San Diego reviews fully affordable projects in about nine days. Speed cuts costs.

Japan with over 3x the population of California has 13! I LOVE Japan, though I prefer much of the European built environment. In any case, Japan is much more affordable.
A good YIMBY trend is cities reducing the number of zoning districts in their code Redmond, WA reduced to 20 zones. Vancouver, WA reduced to just 10 zones. Meanwhile Seattle has 285. Difficult to analyze feasibility when zones are so arbitrarily dispersed like this

The Reagan and post Reagan era “defund social services” approach had shown time and time again that this isn’t the way to government “efficiency.” I’ll defined “efficiency” is usually just an excuse for low taxes for the rich.
Replying to @cruickshank
I just want efficient effective government. We don’t have it today. Washington didn’t become a great state due to the crop of leaders we have running it today.

This means cuts to schools and health care services - a DOGE for Washington State. Seems like a bad idea. But it’s the actual Trojan horse here. Millionaires tax opponents are determined to cut the services we rely on. They need the crisis caused by the tax’s repeal to enable it.
Washington voters approved a spending limit (I-601) in 1993. Lawmakers weakened it, suspended it, and eventually repealed it. With an $80.2 billion budget, voters need to again limit what the Legislature can spend. We can begin by repealing the income tax. #waleg

It is not a Trojan horse. Dems are just careless and wrote the millionaires tax without even considering the need to defend it at the ballot box. There’s no secret plan, they’re just not that bright. And so we have to defend it hobbled by their thoughtlessness.

The rich trying to repeal this would rather pay lower taxes on their annual salaries that exceed a million (first million is free!) than for kids to have universal school lunches. Just one of the many, many things this tax funds.
WA’s new millionaires tax funds universal free school meals at *every* public school in the state! But I-645 defunds it — to give the rich a tax cut. Vote NO on I-645! foodlifeline.org/article/new…

You can count on one hand the number of people with union and public employee pensions that would be impacted. You don’t care about public employees as you constantly rail against the spending that pays their salaries. Vote no on 645 - rich people like you don’t need a tax cut.
Explain to me again April Sims how removing the protection on union and public employee pensions was a technical adjustment to closed a loophole for billionaires. Explain it real slowly so I can understand what dark magic you speak of!

I would like to hear our Catholic Vice President explain why they're intentionally choosing to broadcast the death of a human being for the entire world to see, including children.

Detached houses for the rich few, or apartments for the many?
Over the past few months, endless Albertans have told us the same story. They saved for years to buy a single family home on a quiet street. They picked that neighbourhood on purpose, because of the park at the end of the block or the school two streets over or the neighbours who watch out for each other. Then one morning the house next door came down, with no notice, and later a 16 unit complex went up in its place, with nowhere for anyone to park and no consideration for the neighbourhood. Those are not complaints. They are people describing the place they built a life in with their family. So today we are acting. Edmonton will return to the density and height rules that were in place before 2024 and common sense minimum parking requirements, utility and water infrastructure considerations are coming back. Calgary will hold the line it set when it repealed blanket rezoning. Both cities will take a hard look at their bylaws and come back with something more balanced. Alberta needs more homes. We are building more of them than almost anywhere in Canada. But a home is more than a house, and a neighbourhood is more than a supply of lots.

NEW: Rep. Amy Walen, one of the few Democrats to oppose the millionaires tax, lost her primary to progressive challenger Jessica Forsythe by just 17 votes. Now big business IEs have spent $410k in hopes to buy Walen her seat for another two years. theburnerseattle.com/post/co…

What they don’t tell you is California passed a millionaires tax in *2004* and has seen multiple economic booms, including the current AI boom. Don’t believe their lies - vote NO on I-645, tax the rich to fund our public schools and fuel our economy.
Today, Washington Policy Center and The Buckeye Institute released a new report on what Washington’s income tax would cost the economy. Compared with Washington without the tax, the report projects: • 7,800 fewer full-time jobs in 2028, growing to 18,800 fewer by 2036. • About 1,400 fewer new employer businesses each year. • $4.9 billion less economic output in 2028. • $3.6 billion less consumer spending and $3.1 billion less business investment in 2028. By 2036, the report estimates $2.50 in lost economic output for every additional $1 the state collects. And those estimates assume the tax stays at its current $1 million threshold. Legislators are already talking about lowering it to $250,000. The people losing job opportunities and customers won’t all be millionaires. Selling this tax as something that only affects the wealthy ignores the costs it imposes on everyone else. Read the report below:

Another argument for WA's millionaires tax and against I-645, which repeals that tax and gives the top 0.1% of Washingtonians a massive tax cut.
The top 0.1% of Americans now hold more than six times more wealth than the bottom half.

The legislature could use some of the revenue from a millionaires tax to reduce B&O for small businesses, have a lot left over for schools and services, all without lowering the threshold. Seems better than a tax cut for the rich. No on I-645! seattletimes.com/opinion/wa-…

46th LD candidate Will Dreher’s incredible $300k of campaign donos is sort of an endless well of intrigue. In today’s episode, a maxed out contribution from Deputy Director of Rental Housing Association, the org that exists to fight tenant protections!
