If 4 Chancellors in a calendar year feels like a lot - that's because it is. Since Sir John Smith, the first 'CotE of Great Britain', was appointed in 1708 (replacing 'CotE of England') we've only had 4 CotE in a calendar year once (in 1827).

Abbott's predecessors in 1827 were George Canning (who died suddenly while also serving as Prime Minister) and Viscount Goderich (who requested a change of position after dealing with the strain caused by a financial crisis culminating in a run on the banks).
I've put together a simple sheet in #Tableau which lets you look at the number per year since 1708 (average ~1.34/year). Long story short, 4 Chancellors is a calendar year is, at least, record-equalling.
