I went on @woodbinenyc’s podcast to talk with Matt and Amogh about Laclau and Mouffe’s 1985 treatise Hegemony and Socialist Strategy. Which would have been better titled Hegemony as a Radical Democratic tactic, or Class Theory: A Deconstruction. open.spotify.com/episode/6tC…

another day of reading TWA say things wildly at odds w/ his image: "Snobbishness toward mass media is idiotic. Only by changing the function of mass media can the intellectual monopoly of culture industry be broken; it cannot be accomplished by retreating into social impotence."

It says something that even the most based populism conceals the proletarian condition. The worst thing imaginable would be to fall into a powerless peasantry (which no longer exists) rather than the potentially powerful working masses who are very real but remain unmentionable
The middle class was a 50-year fluke designed to stop communism during the Cold War. The threat is gone, so the elites are taking it apart. You're not falling behind. You're being pushed back into peasantry.

Unlike most thinkers of his day Marx knew the real symbolic power and meaning of architecture. each building makes legible political and material forces and relationships within class societies. When they burn something else always burns too
The bourgeoisie of the whole world, which looks complacently upon the wholesale massacre after the battle, is convulsed by horror at the desecration of brick and mortar! - Karl Marx, The Civil War in France

For those who haven't seen the film he is doing this shit in every scene, the man is constantly raging at 200% and even when he's quiet you can see him vibrating with the strain of not popping off, it's fucking great

it’s a masterpiece. the set design, the costumes, the performances my mom was a huge fan after seeing it very young in the early seventies. she’d obtained a VHS copy, which i watched as a kid, but it was the heavily-censored version from Britain

Chris Wickham died. He was one of the greatest historians of his generation. He was the one who made me rethink the class, power, and exploitation behind all those intellectual debates and shiny artistic life in the medieval and early modern periods. May he rest in peace
RIP Chris Wickham. Unlike so many historians who emphasise particularities and contingencies, he was the master of constructing grand, coherent, beautifully rendered worlds out of his evidence. This, from his 2021 Past and Present essay, is a masterpiece of historical writing.
